for his 'First World Problems'?
Am I wrong or it's 80% the same of 'Sympathy For The Devil', as on 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!'?

Yeah, that's another one. And from The Stone Roses no less. You'd think people would know better.

I had never heard of the Ian Brown record previously.

The decision to sue may depend on how much the Ian Brown record is selling. No point in alleging copyright infringement against a record that didn't make much money.

Infringement suits are about getting money for the copyright owner of the infringed song. The legal bills can be huge, and not too many ace attorneys will take such a suit pro bono or on a contingency basis. Merely shaming a copycat is for internet message boards.

The decision to sue over that Verve record was likely because that record was everywhere. Who wouldn't want the royalties from that?

Intentional pastiche ? Or blatant copy ?

The only thing Brown's and Al's have in common is their title. There's no copyright in a song title. How many songs are there that are called Heartbreaker? Grand Funk, Zep, Pat Benetar, etc.

Same chords, there ends the similarities.

Mick quite obviously took 'inspiration' from Traffic's Dear Mr Fantasy for Sympathy. So maybe Traffic should sue him too?

Sue sue, sue sue...

Blatant rip off , if you hear the opening of the song it sounds like a Fender Rhodes piano playing the E, D, and A notes . The only thing missing is the o o sounds

I still have a hard time hearing The Last Time in Bittersweet Symphony but this is blatantly obvious

The only thing missing is the melody and the lyrics aka the song.

I believe the issue with "The Last Time" and The Verve is that The Verve lifted the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra version of "The Last Time" (that whole violin bit).

From Wikipedia: "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is a song by English alternative rock band the Verve. It is the lead track on their third studio album, Urban Hymns (1997). It is based on a sample it uses from the Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time", and involved some legal controversy surrounding a plagiarism charge. As a result, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was released in June 1997 by Hut Recordings as the first single from the album, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart and stayed in the chart for three months.

my understanding was that the verve asked abkco for permission and were granted it to lift the instrumental part, so the verve paid the royalties and an agreed contract was in place, why then would abkco have the right to sue just on the basis the song sold well. or did the verve overstep the mark regarding the arrangement.

They cleared the sample with Decca who owned the recording. ABKCO then made their claim for the publishing once the record was a huge hit.
It's currently under discussion (again) here: [iorr.org]

That skipping 'violin bit' motif was the verves creation. They merely sampled a small chordal part of the ALOO recording.

with all due respect, but you kinda sound like Vanilla Ice claiming he didn't take "Under Pressure" in recording "Ice Ice Baby". The Verve used the violin melody throughout the entire song. They added a skip, like Vanilla Ice added a "beat", but it's still the ALOO Orchestra melody, which doesn't seem like a "small chordal part" and hardly makes it The Verve's creation. Who's fault it is or how wrong it is to do it is another argument, but it is what it is. It seems like the whole backbone of BOTH songs.

Fast read and replying, wires got crossed regarding "that whole violin bit".

They sampled 4 bars or something, hence merely.

sure it's those three chords...i mean, well.. it's three chords...
oh there's that sneaky b chord, let's see if Brown does it..
hold on..
PLEASED TO MEET YOU....
oh he lets that weird synth do it...
well, it's cool...wtf, nobody is gonna think that's The Stones...
there's probably a bunch of stuff the boys stole more blatantly...lol...
i dunno; a lawsuit will be a grand thread tho...
it would be hundreds of pages long...
we could maybe send one of to the trial to periscope and stuff.
yeh sue him, do it...hey lawyers, go for it....
it's not like we're gonna get a press release that the new LP is ready...
....i hope Mick reads Pete T. quotes and has a cow and has to man up
for the challenge; hurry up Mick, you got only a couple months max now...
I'm surprised that Ian has lasted this long...and me too come to think of it..
oh kay that song stopped; annoying as hell. it was kinda cute for a minute.
there wasn't a bar of it that sounded like The Stones...
oh just because he takes the chords and the melody doesn't mean he didn't write it, right? i mean, all it takes is a pencil; just copy and paste this post's comment right here, i'l sue your ass for sho baby
