Is the speedway still there? Going to the Frisco area in a few weeks and it's only like 35 minutes away from me. Anyone know if it's worth going to and snap a few pics?

It's no longer a racetrack but the area of the concert is still there and open, but don't know if anyone can just go there and see it. Might be on private land.

Everything was there when I showed up about 2 years ago - the track, other ruins, and the Altamont signage makes great pix. The place has an eerie ghost-town vibe, which is appropriate. There was a small gate with a "private property" sign, but that's no problem. Even if it's sunny, dress warmly. It's windy up there.

The track is closed, but it is all still there, completely intact. I just drove by recently.

So long as Stones fans will sit through Melvin Belli's real estate phone conversation, a little of Altamont Speedway will always live on.

Word of advice, go early in the day. After 3PM it will take 90 minutes or more from SF (not Frisco, that's in Texas) due to commute traffic.

Ha ha, you must be a local.I was gonna give JJ Flash a heads up to NOT say the word “Frisco” within 500 miles of San Francisco.you can get away with San Fran and if you wanna get on their good side say “the city”.(if you say “the town” that means Oakland)but Frisco will get you eye rolls and sarcasm,like daspy said, it’s outside of Dallas.

I stopped by there last year. It looks empty but there's still an Altamont sign and a little entrance that remains locked.It was hard to imagine the activity way back in 1969.

From 1:05 til 1:08 it's at the top left of the frame, the open field sloping down and again the top of the frame sloping from left to right down to where the stage was set up, various photo's online can give you your bearings as the highway behind the Speedway is unchanged.

I wonder what it's worth, it's still in the middle of nowhere between Tracy, Livermore and what looks like a fairly newish subdivision called Mountain House.

Any Northern Californian's out there with any info

A racetrack is probably contaminated with years-worth of toxic chemicals from petroleum products. In California, the sites of old gas stations have to remove contaminated soil. A site that large would cost many millions to clean. That may be part of the reason it remains as it is.

Hmmm I could lease it for Dec 6, it wouldn't cost much, drag in a Outdoor Screen and put on "Gimme Shelter", being the 50th anniversary.

I'll inquire with Janus Films re: License as I wouldn't wan't to cross them or The Stones Organization, as a friend once did with scary threats of compensation

Actually it'd be a blast but it'd have to be a bit on the D.L. or half of Haight Asbury would reemerge for a nostalgia "Trip", although half of them are long gone

Glad you are coming to the City. Please don't call it 'Frisco'! (nobody here calls it that). You might want to check out Melvin Belli's old law offices. It has since changed hands, but you can still look through the front window and see the interior where some of the scenes were filmed.
