Your favourite long tunes
Date: November 29, 2018 15:25

Let's forget about the quick rockers, the pop tunes and the short ballads for a minute.

Rank your favourite extended Stones tunes (5 minutes +), be they long jams (like MR), dragged out ballads (like SOL) or epical numbers (like MM).

The first song I thought of "Continental Drift".

It is hard, very hard to write 3 minute songs. GOOD 3 minute songs. Those guys in the 60's were masters. You say it all in that little time, throw in a bridge, a solo, repeated hooks and go home.
I am recording at the moment, and that is one thing that is front and center: short songs. I will look at counter afterwards thinking "yes , made it; and it will read 5:05 or something.."

Without much reflection ten best Stones studio originals over 5 minutes:

1. Sympathy For The Devil
2. You Can't Always Get What You Want
3. Midnight Rambler
4. Wild Horses
5. Moonlight Mile
6. Can't You Hear Me Knocking
7. Winter
8. Let It Loose
9. Memory Motel
10. Time Waits For No One

Bubbling under: "Let It Bleed", "Salt of the Earth".... ("Miss You" would have made the list, #6, if the extended version counts... for me that's THE "Miss You")

I guess the five minutes barrier is a bit too light - it includes so many songs that one perhaps doesn't quite think of as 'long' ones (especially if we have friends of progressive rock here...grinning smiley). Would it be better to rise it to six minutes or something? The list from which to pick up songs would be at least a bit shorter...

Ha ha, Gomper was already pretty high up on my list. The others are now noted and included thumbs up

Chris: SAL is only 4:14 (but brilliant indeed).

A lot of these songs don't really seem "long" to me ("Worried About You", "Let It Bleed". Then again, some songs I would have guess "long", aren't really ("Undercover", "Tie You Up", "100 years ago").

Without looking up their real lengths, what seem to me really long songs are "Going Home", "Midnight Rambler" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and quite long "Sympathy" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

From these I would classify them as:

- "Going Home": nice try, maybe revolutionary at that time, but for modern ears a bit too tame. But nice.
- "Midnight Rambler": their best long song and obviously one of the best things they ever did
- "Can't You Hear Me Knocking": I am not so fond of the first part, but the jam+solo (both guitar and sax) are great
- "Sympathy For The Devil": what can I say, a classic of course. Both the Beggar's Banquet and the Get Yer Ya Ya's Out version are fantastic.
- "You Can't Always Get What You Want": another classic.

Maybe they should make more long songs, they seem to be good at it. Not so strange maybe, given that blues-based jamming is one of their strengths.
