Black Limou? Are you sure Dandy? Keith always plays it in standard live...confused smiley

Stop Breaking Down I ain't sure of but I would guess it's in standard.

Baby Break It Down is 100% Standard, it's the b Sharp/F riff using the root note similar to Ronnie's riff in Start Me Up so that's a standard.

Too Tough and Too Tight, yeah, open G

smileys with beer

Yep, BL is in open G on Tattoo You, but was played in standard live on the 1981/82 tours. In 1995 he played it in open G again live.

Stop Breaking Down features both Taylor and Jagger on open G guitars.

Come on Mate! Brixton 1995, Keith uses his TV Junior Single Cut, standard all the way………;-)

Alright, there are more numbers where they have used open G to decorate the sound but I wrote my list as a list of songs where the main riff/chords are open G. BBID is written in standard I'm pretty sure, as is Hey Negrita.

Yeah, Brixton is definitely in standard, my bad. But the TY version is indeed in open G.

But weren't we discussing Stones songs in open G, not merely songs where the main riff is in open G?

Even though Ronnie plays the lead guitar/riff guitar in Hey Negrita, Keith is definitely playing a badass open G, hence it has to be included on the list smiling smiley

And Mick Jagger's main riff guitar on Stop Breaking Down is as open G as it gets (capo on second fret). I've played that tune a few times, so I should know..

BTW, the only song they have released, featuring Ronnie on open G (that I know of), is Little Red Rooster from El Mocambo.

I started a list a long time ago. It's interesting how it kind of goes away in the mid-1970s.

Is your list still around somewhere?

Drew

No. Before Google backup.

Before They Make Me Run is the only one on SG.

Weird, eh?

How many on ER? None that I can recall.

Mick plays open G on the title track (SG).

No open G on ER smiling smiley

I believe that Winter on GHS has Mick J playing rhythm in Open G (Capo 2nd fret)...

What do you guys think of the acoustic tracks he did around 68 and 69?
Prodigal Son
You Gotta Move
Factory Girl
Downtown Suzie
You Got the Silver
Salt of the Earth
If You Let Me

Downtown Suzie is the only one in open G, but it was played by Ry Cooder (where the in-between licks later to be heard on HTW with Keith were featured)..

I don't remember what's open E or open D on the remaining songs right here and now, but I believe PS and YGM were open D and YGTS and SOTE open E.

If memory serves, there weren't any open G-tracks from Keith until HTW. We were debating whether he had removed the dark E-string on the Hyde Park-gig or not. The beast was still fresh smiling smiley

I Don’t Know Why

There are several songs where Brian played in open G as well.

Might have misunderstood something, but

Studio version of You can't always get is open E (+ standard 2nd guitar)
I Don’t Know Why rhythm guitar is open g, solo standard

I would add Hey negrita to the open G list (keith's guitar).

C

Yep, you're right. I was mixing it up re YCAGWYW. The Rock'n'Roll Circus-version was in standard tuning.

Are you sure I Don't Know Why is in open G? I can't hear any signs of that. He keeps busy with more notes than usual Hey Negrita is indeed in open G.

Checked out yesterday: I don’t know why is 100% open G (

It is an interesting sidenote that the Keith Richards Mick Taylor get to know when entering his first Stones sessions was the one taming the 'beast': "Honky Tonk Women", "Jiving Sister Fanny", "I Don't Know Why", "I'm Going Down"... A good timing to enter!

PS: They kept going like that in Hyde Park. It took some gigs in the US to tame that beast, apparently..

Are you sure? It sounds like his Zemaitis in Open E, like he also did on Knebworth. Keith is in Open G though, also on his Zemaitis.

If so, Ronnie is doing those descending Brian-licks without even once clashing with the e-string. Somehow, I doubt that. The only time he goes for that high G, it sounds like quite the effort, too.

But I'm not 100% sure.

Nope, open. If it’s not what Keith used, I’d still recommend it. Works beautifully!

Live it was open D without a capo, as seen in the Ya Yas-dvd. Unless YGM is in C on SF I suspect that's the case with the studio recording as well?

Yes, there’s clearly a low C at the root of the studio recording.

Keith is standard. Ronnie is playing slide in open G, and there's also another guitar that's most likely Mick thats in open G.

also on Little Red Rooster, Ronnie is 100% open G. Just watch him at the Knebworth or Oakland 2013 versions and try what he does in open E and you'll see what I mean. It's most certainly open G.

Ronnie is playing a pedal steel. The other clean-sounding rhythm guitar that comes in a couple of times (probably Keith) is also in standard tuning.
