Yesterday I saw the (not very convincing) movie A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga and noticed a cameo appearance of Don Was as a bass player in a supergroup of a Roy Orbison tribute. He's listet here officially:

Seen the original with Judy Garland and the 76 remake. I'll see this version eventually, but I'm not in a hurry. I'm a mess at sad movies.

Ryan O'Neal was dating Bianca Jagger and Barbra Streisand simultaneously.

My understanding is the original was with Janet Gaynor in 1937, then Garland (1954), then Streisand (1976,) and now Gaga.

I thought this new one was just okay. Saw the previous two, not the first one.

Haven't seen any versions of A Star Is Born...looking forward to renting this new one when it comes out.

I was surprised to see that this is still playing in first-run theaters more than two months after its release. Even more surprised that it's being screened several times a day at my local IMAX theater, where I had what turned out to be a private screening this morning, the only person in the 500-seat IMAX theater on a cold and dismal Tuesday in December.

I found it a bit of a chore to sit through the entire movie, and I don't expect I'll ever have any desire to see it again. The music does greatly benefit from being heard in thunderous surround sound, but there's not enough of it. It seemed like only a couple of the songs are actually performed in their entirety from start to finish. Everything else is just bits and pieces of what might be really good songs; a series of promo clips for the soundtrack CD that I'll probably never bother to hear.

At 32, Gaga looks a little old to be a completely unknown singer/songwriter who suddenly becomes a pop superstar. Then again, Streisand was 34 when she made her ASIB, so maybe that's deliberate and thematic, but has this ever happened in real life? Without exception, singer/songwriter/pop stars, not the least of which Gaga herself, are already long past the peak of their creativity by the time they've reached that age.

Thing I didn't like about an otherwise great film was how quickly Lady Gaga's character changed from a gritty, real, earthy performer/songwriter to an orange haired, leotard g-string wearing pop singer...
