Performance is written by Jay Glennie, working closely with Performance producer Sandy Lieberson, who opened up his extensive archives. The large format book takes a comprehensive look at the landmark British film. Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the filming of Performance, it includes exclusive interviews with cast & crew (including Mick Jagger, James Fox, Nic Roeg and Sandy Lieberson), soundtrack musicians and artists influenced by the film.

Featuring stunning on-location images, many of which have never been published before, this book is the definitive account of the unlikely and often difficult journey from page to screen of Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg’s visionary film. Every film has its own extraordinary story but never anything like Performance! The book details how a group of mostly first time filmmakers managed to raise the money for a film without showing the studio financing it a script and then shoot the whole film on location away from any studio executives preying eyes and then see their film not released for two years.

Performance the book looks at the personality clashes on set, the unconventional working methods of codirectors Donald Cammell and Nic Roeg and their stars Mick Jagger, James Fox, Anita Pallenberg and Michèle Breton. Through first-hand accounts and extensive research, we find out what it was like to work on the famed film. And after a shoot that was typified by a ‘work hard, play hard’ approach, we discover there was still more controversy to come with a soundtrack only featuring one Mick Jagger song, the refusal to release the film by Warner Bros. until it was heavily edited and a decidedly cool reception from most critics.

That Performance is now seen as a classic that was ahead of its time says something about the enduring power of the film, the genius of Donald Cammell and Nic Roeg and the mesmerising presence of Mick Jagger, James Fox, Anita Pallenberg and Michèle Breton.

Not sure that Donald Cammell could be described as a 'genius'....heck he's not in the same league as Hitchcock, Spielberg, Lucas etc. Nic Roeg though has had a very successful career and is rightly respected in the industry.

Not sure...is Michelle Breton still alive?

hopefully it'll be cheaper by Christmas (2019), I'd like to read it, but not at that price.

it's a great movie; i seriously do love it;
i think Mick's natural talents were used very effectively.
people seem to love it or hate it and really I've no business
trying to be a film critic. but i think the other lead, Mr. Fox,
a very fine actor in a very sensitive and totally against-type
kind of vulnerable role; and I think his presence is commanding;
this isn't hard days night tho i do love that one's black and white
faux-documentary approach and the dry humor that is self-deprecating...

Mick IS beautiful here; I guess so is most everybody,
other than the fine British character actors also casted.
The song is out of this world great; it just is.
it's only these last years that I've heard various demos
where Mick's EXCELLENT EXCELLENT Vokes has already been cut!!
i think this is way before Ry, please someone let me know if i've got this skewed...
....i mean all those versions i'd finally heard (LOVED the track instantly,
saw the film as it came out; and many times; i was 17 or so; the Stones
were my big big energy-source and had been for years already....
...someone kept tooling with it till it was just so great.
to see Mick do that on the Big Screen, in that pre-MTV kinda
Memo For Turner clip, was astounding.
i don 't think i sort of 'understood' the thematic stuff in a larger
sense intellectually until some good professional reviews helped
break it down for me; but intuitively, the energy of it, seemingly
beyond my fan-boy fascination with Mick, ...
well i'll search the archives here for some more learned perspectives,
and also the web, cause the whole deal fascinates me...
i'll not make fun of Keith's bitterness in the "LIFE" auto-bio interviews...
it's an 'affair' of the heart for him, involving the other other guy and all that....
.....but i thought it unseemly; i don't know Campbell to think he's that much of a prick but hey, i'm a 17 year old Yank fan at the time and was bowled over;
i think some of the movies that were my favorites that decade around them still hold up very well; i'd like to see this again; i wonder if in my own 60's,
hosw much of it I would roll with.
I DO watch that Memo For Turner clip; and other clips from the movie,
about ten zillion times; i'm still fascinated by that era Mick; well all eras all of them. This was a Very interesting choice for Mick; and I think he seared an indelible mark on it. It's themes of duality and identity are as remarkable or banal as what the viewer brings to it I think.
i'm a big fan of this movie. and hope this thread develops.

Ahead of it`s time? Wasn`t it of it`s time, as experimental films stopped around 1970? It didn`t make enough money. Star Wars was the 70s answer to 2001...

well maybe in a commecial sense but comparing Kubrick to the comic-book fun that would come 5 or 6 years later; even with amazing special effects for the time, is not really fair to either film.
Comparing anything Kubrick to anyone less than a Hitchcock or the few in those ethers, would not be fruitful for the candidate running against Stanley imo.
yeh; i never thought of Performance as a hit. It was in an indie theatre sort of lower mid, or downtown Manhattan. I recall going back several times,
('d later do the same at the Zigfeld (sp?) when "L&G..." was in specially tuned quad there), but that was 57th street or nearby to my memory....
....and in a more special release; Performance was always an 'art house'
kinda deal I think it's fair to say. I doubt if lots of the US got it at all
till many years later for cultists like us.

Thanks for posting “Bye Bye Johnny”. I would have missed this!

I got excited when I saw this, and then realized it was a book. Albeit, a fine looking and probably great book. But I was hoping the post was going to announce that the film was finally getting a restored, perhaps even "Criterion" treatment....considering another Roeg film, "The Man Who Fell to Earth", has already received such a treatment, and "Performance" far outshines that film, in my opinion.

This is the kind of book I would like very much ( not like Ronnie's setlists..). Colin McCabe's book years ago opened my eyes to so much of "Performance". And then Keith writing "Gimme Shelter" is its shadows. Hope it goes down in price.

Where does the information that it is out on December 1st come from? It's not on their website which is still taking orders at the 'early bird' price of £100. I placed an order on November 18th which has not even been acknowledged though they've taken the money. It certainly hasn't arrived yet. I emailed them earlier today to ask for a despatch date.
