Exile On Main Street - Let's imagine what the album would be

If you were going to create a Stones album to be called, say, Exile On Main Street, which tracks would you put on it?

Just as it is. It is not just the songs but the harmony between them. What an album.

Sweet Black Angel
Loving Cup

I think that’s a very good idea and I’m glad the band did as you suggest. Perfect!

I first heard Exile as a 17 year old in the summer of 1997. I have listened to it almost every Friday night since then and the tracklisting, running order etc is perfect (at least on vinyl, I’ve never listened to this on CD)

I think it’s a get or don’t album, I’ve converted a few but not many to it’s virtues...

We've all had this thought and obviously there's songs I'd take off, but I also used to do this with the White Album, as I'm sure we all did, and what you learn is the album is precisely what it is BECAUSE of everything. The White Album isn't the White Album without all that shit in between and thats similar with Exile. I think there's less blatant crap on Exile, but there's stuff I'd take off to make it a strong single album. But something like I Just Want To See His Face (which I think is total filler but again) is part of what makes Exile Exile. The same way Wild Honey Pie is what makes the White Album what it is. So I'll participate but in the end, you can make a shorter album, but Exile is Exile because of every note currently on it.

My single album is extremely easy to make:

1. Rocks Off
2. Rip This Joint
3. Tumbling Dice
4. Sweet Virginia
5. Torn And Frayed
6. Loving Cup

1. Happy
2. Ventilator Blues (or Stop Breaking Down)
3. Let It Loose
4. All Down The Line
5. Shine A Light
6. Soul Survivor

I could take off 2 more if I had to for time limits. I like the remaining songs but there's always been one side of material I basically thought was less stronger than the rest. But again, I can't picture the album without them.

I wouldn't change a single thing.

I got my first copy of Exile for my 12th birthday (along with the Allman Brothers' Eat a Peach) in 1972. I've bought many copies since. Having spent 46 years listening to it regularly, I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's imperfectly perfect as is, warts and all.

I would change that it had no Mick Taylor due to Brian not destroying himself earlier.

Brian staying alive and the real Rolling Stones staying intact. Win win.

But, there is only what happened.

The album is as perfect as it can get. Nothing about it needs to be changed.

God bless

Exile is Exile.
Nothing to change...

If we peel off the tracks from the late 60s and 1970 + the songs from Mick's house and LA, we'll have the «real» Exile:

Rocks Off
Rip This Joint
Casino Boogie
Loving Cup
Happy
Ventilator Blues
Let It Loose
All Down The Line
Soul Survivor

Even many of these songs weren't entirely recorded at Nellcôte.

Pretty good album, though winking smiley

I know that the sources all say something different, but weren't Loving Cup and All down the line recorded at Sunset (the first versions were from 1969)

Indeed.

They did work on ADTL on both Sunset and Olympic + at Nellcôte. LC was Nellcôte and Sunset. The earlier versions did not make it on the original Exile, according to various sites (but two spliced versions of LC did on the bonus disc).

A funny thing is that there are almost as many Stargroves-recordings on Exile as Nellcôte-tunes smiling smiley

Stop Breaking Down is also from Olympic.

There are photos from the session.

Is anyone doubting that? Olympic and Sunset.

I dunno, I misread the meaning of your list. grinning smiley

I'd be very surprised if anything on LC comes from France.

Let It Loose is also from Olympic, the basic backing track atleast.

Timeisonourside claims Nellcôte and Sunset, but I have indeed read that they recorded Let It Loose at Olympic..

And there were supposed to be eight tracks from Nellcôte, not nine, so you may be right here smiling smiley

Yeah, LIL dates back to before Taylor even joined. eye popping smiley

Kind of makes sense of Taylor not playing on it and Nicky playing mellotron.

Considering the publishing rights Abkco vs Rolling Stones Records Sticky Fingers would have been the double and Exile on Main Street the single record:
I burned the tracks on cd - it gives you a totally fresh listening (btw, try the same for the song order given on the record sleeves of Let It Bleed and Through The Past...!)

Sticky Fingers:
Side A = Brown Sugar, Sway, Dead Flowers, I Got The Blues
Side B = Sweet Virgina, Torn And Frayed, Wild Horses, Loving Cup
Side C = Sister Morphine, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, You Gotta Move
Side D = Bitch, Stop Breaking Down, Shine A Light, Moonlight Mile

Exile n Main St'
Side A = Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Shake Your Hips, Casino Boogie, Tumbling Dice, Let It Loose
Side B = All Down The Line, Happy, Turd On The Run, Ventilator Blues/Just Wanna..., Sweet Black Angel, Soul Survivor

Sorry, I simply forgot the de luxe version's new songs!
Now that needs a new cd burning!

Sounds great!

If you're on Spotify I made two playlists from the above JJHMick suggested

One is called 'stickyexile playlist', the other is 'exilesticky playlist'

It's a nice listen

You can't improve on the best F-ing album ever made.

Re: Exile On Main Street - Let's imagine what the album would be

The one part of 'Exile' that is always ignored is he LA sessions. Much is made of the bad conditions in Nellcote but Jimmy M and Andy J obviously did an amazing job getting the physics right; getting a good signal on tape whenever they did record.
As muddy as "Exile" is it is pretty tightly wound. And you can hear everything.
So at some point there was a lot of very good work done.
The mixing, the vocals, the horns, the BU vocals, mastering - that all sounds like LA.
