55 years ago today the Stones copyright their first composition, "Stoned".

"This Agreement made this eleventh day of October 1963 between Southern Music Publishing Company Limited of 8 Denmark Street London WC2 (hereinafter referred to as "the Publisher") of the one part and Michael Jagger jointly and severally with Brian Jones, Charles Watts, William Perks, Keith Richards and Ian Stewart all c/o Eric Easton Ltd., 93-97 Regent Street, London W1
(Joint pseudonym - "Nanker Phelge")
(hereinafter referred to as the Composer") of the other part."

"As we say in England, it can get a bit trainspottery"

Never seen that before. Another gem, Deltics.

not a great composition by any means. easy to see why the stones were not favoured ahead of the beatles in the songwriting stakes early on. The stones improved vastly over the years in that department.

As Keith said, it's a ripoff of Booker T's Green Onions.

Maybe so, but it's different enough that it stands on its own to my ears.
It has more of a looser barrelhouse blues vibe vs. the steady tempo of Green Onions' organ dominated track.
Plus consider the time frame and Mick shouting out "Stoned"..."Out of my mind"..."where am I at"...what a rebel!
Whatever the case, love them both.

This track (along with a few others) was published/copyrighted to Southern Music, a long established music publisher. It was a bit like The Beatles with their Ardmore and Beechwood deal late 1962 (ie for Love Me Do and the flip).
It was presumably a short term deal so when Andrew Oldham began to be a greater influence (than Eric Easton) on business matters he got a deal with Essex Group.

Southern is now part of Songs of Peer/PeerMusic a huge US based Publishing empire. That's why Songs of Peer is shown as the Publishers credit on the repackages. So ABKCO don't quite have 100% of the 60's copyrights, as is so often stated
