When my dad passed away when I was 12 in 1975, I was in a dream state for days, and the only thing I recall from his funeral was his favorite song being played - All I Have to Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers.

My moms favorite song for many years was Over the Rainbow sung by Judy Garland, and then when the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo?ole released his version in 1990 - a version that segued into What a Wonderful World - that became her absolute favorite. When she passed away, that was the only tune that was played at the end of the service, and not a dry eye in the house....still tough for me to listen to....

Then my older bro suddenly passed away unexpectedly, but instead of a traditional funeral, it was more of a gathering of the tribes - family and friends, BBQ, etc.,... a proper party and celebration of his life.
I wrote a eulogy and read it to everyone as best I could, and then picked one song to be played for him - one of his all time favorites:

As for me, I've thought of several tunes throughout the years to be played at my wake/celebration , but have never written any of them down or told anyone.

My mom died in march in the age of 96. After a life full of love for her familiy and friends it was a very hard death for her - over a week she vanished piece by piece. Fully aware what was going on. She doesn't deserve this. It was terrible for all of us. For the funeral we choosed a song that she loved so much: "Rote Rosen", some kind of a german folk ("Schlager") song. That made me think about my choice for my funeral and this is my list:

1. Across The Bridge Where Angels Dwell - Van Morrison
2. Trying to get to Heaven (Before they close the door) - Bob Dylan
3. Farewell, Farewell - Fairport Convention

I'm 60, my father is 97, and I think I will have some time left to change the list

As youngster I wanted Gimmie a Shelter at mine.....but I changed my mind as I cannot hear it at my funeral my family can choose one or no music at all it's up to them.........

Great topic for those of us getting on in life. Another point of view here:

In my case, people are hopefully going to think fondly of me and not be sad whenever they hear a Stones song. So yes, there will be Stones songs at my memorial service someday . . . a long time from now . . but I am 65 and you never know when you will draw the black card.

Last year a good Stones friend of many years passed unexpectedly and I was tasked with creating a Stones playlist for his services. Lots of the tunes you might expect but the one that really hit hard for me was "Shine a Light". I will want that one too.

Not so typical; he wanted Ya-Yas Midnight Rambler played at the end with everyone walking out of the chapel. Kinda cool because he wanted the boys playing loud and hard in your face one final time.

i have occasionally thought about my funeral and having the stones played, but didnt think on starting a thread on it, however now its been discussed, the thought of having stuff like paint it black, jigsaw puzzle and citadel would appeal.

A funeral is sad, but inevitable for us all, so it would be good for loved ones to know what sort of music i was into.

Talking about our funerals, I told my song to play "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

My son replied that he would play "Honk Tonk Woman" at my funeral since it's my favorite Stones song. I then quoted the song, "I met a gin-soaked bar room queen in Memphis..I layed a divorcee in New York City..."

He said, "Oh, I didn't know the lyrics."

I told him I'd leave a sort, edited version of the song and keep, "I went down to the demonstration to get my fair share of abuse...and keep the part of the song where it breaks in to the climax where the angles are singing!

He said, "OK."

A few days before my mom passed, my then-nine-year-old autistic nephew sang Bridge Over Troubled Water to her around her deathbed in front of the family. He's not chatty, but he sings. Wasn't a dry eye in the room. Would've ruin that song for me if I hadn't forced myself to play the Simon and Garfunkel record shortly after the funeral.

My last surviving uncle was buried about four weeks back ...

I think otherwise ; when somebody passes, somebody I knew or even more somebody I loved, sadness and sorrow are the emotions that I feel. I don't believe in after life; when you're dead, you are dead. If one enjoys living, it is terrible that it has to stop. For my funeral, I would like them to hear "wild Horses", "Moonlight Mile",and " Jumping Jack Flash".
Sometimes, tears have to be cried.

Death is part of life, so it should not be hidden. "Moonlight Mile" is a beautiful choice. "Heaven" would be beautiful too.
