Funeral music and Stones songs
Posted by: bv ()

The local radio station announced a list of the most popular funeral music songs. That reminded me of what I have been thinking about lately.

When I was younger I though a Stones song might be appropriate for my funeral. After all, The Rolling Stones have been a central part in my living for most of my life.

Then I think about songs like "Gabriel's Oboe", often used in funerals. It makes me sad. Sure it is a beautiful song, but as it has been played at funerals I have attended, I feel sad when I hear it.

There will be no Stones songs in my funeral. I told my family. I don't plan or expect to pass in many years still, but when the time is up, I don't want my family and friends to be sad when they hear any Stones song.

That is a wise and kind decision. I know that feeling, I got one song that was playing until my dad came in and told me of the death of a very close friend of ours. I could never listen again without thinking about that moment and being emotional.

I think otherwise ; when somebody passes, somebody I knew or even more somebody I loved, sadness and sorrow are the emotions that I feel. I don't believe in after life; when you're dead, you are dead. If one enjoys living, it is terrible that it has to stop. For my funeral, I would like them to hear "wild Horses", "Moonlight Mile",and " Jumping Jack Flash".
Sometimes, tears have to be cried.

Rockandroll,

Mops

'Fire' by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown seems to be quite popular too.

Music is the only language that everybody in this world understands. Without music we are dead.

Coming Down Again, Sympathy for the Devil and other Stones's songs could be associated with funeral music.

I will be cremated. No big event or music.

Low Down.

Makes me think of "Under the Boardwalk" . Or a more philosophical approach - "Goin Home" or "On With the Show".

I attended a funeral where Wild Horses was played. It was a cover version, though.

It was beautiful, but very, very sad..

At my mom's funeral they played "Imagine" as the closing song.
Now, I avoid it and still get choked up every time I happen across the song.

Good advise, Bjornulf.

The Nearness of you from Paris 03 would be a great choice and highly unlikely to be heard again and cause upset.

A funeral should be a celebration, imho.
I would hope for Respectable, if not the entire Some Girls album, to be played at mine...actually please hook up and play the full 8-Track for me in all its glory.

I'm a tad bit disturbed that Bjornulf has brought this up though...
A mortality discussion is quite the conundrum.

I've thought about telling my wife to come here, to this forum, if I pass early.
But then she might dig around and see how much time I actually spend here! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Rock On, my friends!

Hopefully not in circumstances in keeping with the subject matter of the song winking smiley

The IORR Band would need a new bass player!

IIRC, it was said at the time to be the fastest song the Stones had done to date in beats per minute. DP will know for sure winking smiley. I thought it worked very well live on the BtB tour.

True: never thought about a song at my funeral.
creamate, please don’t keep me on a shelf in a container, rather,
release in redwood groves, water. Call me from your heart and I’ll do what I can.

Oh god we’re writing our last wishes.
They’re really not touring again, are they? sad smileywinking smiley

Not my funeral which will be traditional, but my wake will have "Days" and "Scattered" by The Kinks, "Slipping Away" by the Stones, and "Everything You Know is Wrong" by Weird Al Yankovic.

I haven't attended a funeral in 30 years. Lucky, or lonely, a loner most apt.
