What I`m advocating has some common features with easy listening, although I`m no fan of James Last. In such a view there`s no room for neither Joni Mitchell nor Tina Turner, but leave that to me. To each his own. Some people don`t seem to have a listener`s ear, like myself before I got hooked. To them, a lot of stuff just sounds like some bland la-la-la; too subtle. It helps to have lived at the time the music was around, at least as a child.

I remember one guy who lost the track when David Bowie came with his follow up to "Putting Out Fire", which was "Let`s Dance". All of a sudden it was "Nah..." -But he could relate to Zappa`s "Bobby Brown", Bee Gees` "Staying Alive", Pink Floyd`s "Another Brick In The Wall, (part two)", Donna Summer`s "Hot Stuff", a song by Kate Bush and a couple of songs by Billy Joel. However, when I said "Hey, listen to this; this is ABC with their album "Lexicon of Love" (the disco rythm should sure be to his taste), he just retorted; "well, it sure sounds smooth..."

I'm a Hundred Per Cent Dee Dee Sharp guy.
Not that slick soul stuff they tried to rescue her career with when she got a little older. I know it seems like another bad hoppy joke but that rich
effervesence; and also that mixture of hestiancy and confidence that could
take a 15, 16 year old kid to the Top of the charts and multiple TV shots way before she was just 17 and you know etc.....being big Mac fans here, eye rolling smiley
uh, a lotta you would know.
yes dee dee;
did you even listen?
could you DO the Mashed Potatoes.
yes or no. can you?
have you? yes or no?
can you get down in it? have you ever got down in it with the Mashed Potatoes?
Yes or NO?
I'M WAITING.
I mean right out in the open where everybody could see, and without shame.
with ebullience and Strut? yes or no have you?
i'm not saying you'd have to do a c0-fcomensurate "monkey," "jerk," "slide," "fly," "boogagoo," "funky broadway," "stroll," or even the furriggin' rhumba, just the mash potatoe, yes or no? and when it comes
to that "weema wommma weema wommma
or somhing like that, every bit as hot as Ronnie Spectors "WHoa whoa uhh oohhh" on be my bibby, by that wig mutha who threatened to shoot joey ramone, what an ass...
anyway, have you yes or no?
well then, i'm not gonna live in your denial; just to keep all my popularity here. no way.

Well, Aretha Franklin is number one obviously. The three best voices of the 20th century are Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters and Toots Hubbard.

Plenty of more great ones, frank.

I'm pretty sure that Twiggy released a record at some point (I have no idea what it was like), so she gets my vote!

Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin.
Both by a countrymile ahead.

Then there is Janis Joplin to complete the trio.

…………….

When I have fascination for some of those '60s female singers, maybe not so much the same ones as yours, even if also those out of charm may be OK at least in one song at a time, it (for my preferred female singers) is almost never by virtue of their potential for supplying "easy listening", but due to quite other aspects of their impact on me. That for me applies to the Supremes as well or on a few songs by Sonny and Cher (think about "I Got You Babe").

Honorable mention to Diana Ross, Darlene Love, and Dusty Springfield

Just saw a bio of Joni Mitchell`s Isle of Wight concert from 1970. I thought I had to see it, although it bored me. This can`t be anybody`s cup of tea. In fact it`s bordering to experimental, I`d say. I just heared Judy Collins version of "Both Sides Now". That one was better. I could even hear the greatness of this song. -And so many cover versions! Even Frank Sinatra had his version (1968).
