Add Linda Ronstadt to that list! She mentioned the open hostility that female singers faced in the 60's & 70's and yet THEY PERSISTED! So glad they had the balls to carry on!

Mavis Staples was recording as a 17 year old in 1956, and continued through the '60s into this day. Just saw her at NOLA Jazzfest last Spring and she was going strong. Mick & Keith got "The Last Time" from a riff in an old spiritual the Staples Family Singers did.

American folk-singer Carolyn Hester is also still around at 82. She gave Bob Dylan his first recording on her third album in 1961.

Tammi Terrell, Wanda Jackson, Judy Henske, Rose Maddox and Mama Cass Elliott all rate.

I think Cher was actually a really good singer back in the 60's. She became more of a Vegas performer after that but she still has a distinct voice.

I'll throw in LaLa Brooks, the lead singer of the Crystals. I always assumed it was Darlene Love singing but LaLa was the lead singer on And Then He Kissed Me and Da Do Ron Ron. You can see a video of her on David Letterman shortly before he retired. One of the best performances on his show!

Yes...great voice and feel ...could have been much better served by the recording industry than she was.

Don't know if they fall in the category, but our own Mina and Brazilian star Elis Regina are too great not to be mentioned!

Mina, la tigre, is IMO the greatest singer ever. On my (very lightly used) FB page I have her as my picture. I do however consider her 60's and 70's material as her best.
I don't know why Tube took down the one vintage TV performance of her doing "Grande Grande" in its entirety. You can take all your crotch grabbing, and in-yer-face butts - no one is sexier than Mina.
