OT: any love for 60s female singers?

I love them all; Cilla Black, Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Bobbie Gentry, Nancy Sinatra... It`s relaxing music, probably what some people would call"chillout"
(but is it?). There are lush orchestral arrangements, and it`s not compressed, like today`s music.

Okay...Aretha, Dionne Warwick, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Barbra Streisand, Lesley Gore, Jackie DeShannon, to note a few. All, and a number of others, are to be found rotating through my playlist.

Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight are my two favourites. I love the smoothness of Diana Ross’ vocals on all those wonderful Supremes recordings.

Carole King. Sheer class both as singer and songwriter.

heap of the very greatest early 60's imo.
Dee Dee Sharp
Betty Everett
Shirelles
Crystals
Ronnettes
Supremes
Martha & The Vandellas
Nina Simone (tho I think she broke in the 50's)
many others pre Invasion that set the scene imo.
and were just absolutely great pop rock and soul singers.
i'll think of many more I'm sure......

post invasion there's Linda Rondstadt, who I think deserves highest praise for a really rock solid series of albums.
so many. patti labelle
laura nyro
carole kind (but fifties also)
janis janis janis
grace obviously.
very many more; the very best of the best.

Nina Simone is another favourite. For British singers, you cannot beat a bit of Dusty Springfield.

Absolutely. Some of the greatest footage I have ever seen (besides Aretha in studio) is Cilla Black recording "Alfie" in huge UK studio with Burt Bacharach and orchestra.
I mean where to start? The great names have all been mentioned in this thread already.
Dusty, Janis, Aretha of course, Joni Mitchell, Nancy S.
I do believe that Marianne Faithfull didn't come into her own until late 70's when she dropped "Broken English".
Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn from Nashville.

Love 'em. Been playing guitar for 52 years. (i'm 64). In the past year or so I took to singing some of those old girl songs in my casual band and they've gone over great! They even work for us gravelly voiced old men. I sing these...
To Sir With Love - Lulu
Walk On By - Dionne Warwick
Norman - Sue Thompson (changed to "Norma")
Boots - Nancy Sinatra
It's Too Late - Carole King
Evergreen - Barbara Streisand
My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (complete with flute intro done on recorder).

The crowd always loves it because nobody ever does them.
