That's a fair point with the studio/live thing.

Two of the best gigs I ever went to was The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and The Jam yet I never owned any of their records!

Thought AC/DC or Metallica would have featured more heavily in this survey.

If I had to choose the reatest rock band for live performance, I would have to go with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. When they're at their best, they can't be touched in terms of their musical chops and ability to play a wide genre of songs very well. I'd put Neil Young and Crazy Horse, when they were on it, right up there for live playing.

As for greatest rock band, it depends on your definition of rock. I'd put the Stones and The Beatles at the top of the list, with the Beatles getting the nod as the most influential of the two. As for any other group being the greatest - The Who, LZ, Doors, Clash, Cream, JHExperience, etc., it all depends on what your ears enjoy and where you place their songs in your life.

early van halen live saw them in '79 open up for sabbath,they blew ozzy and co, away and it wasn't just eddie, back then david lee roth could hold his own with anyone live,but the booze, drugs,internal things ended it, but for a brief period in time, in my opinion van halen was the best live band on the planet.

Good one shattered - I think they were hugely underrated, probably because, I think, because the 'Radio' had them down as a novelty act - funny songs/lyrics etc - but live, the musicianship was sublime especially on the extended renditions - Davey Payne playing two saxophones at the same time was a 'sight' to see and hear.......[en.wikipedia.org]
