He, Grace, and Kantner had their own form of weaving vocally.

Excellent comment -- they listened to each other like jazz musicians.

Loved the Jorma tribute too. Marty Balin was part of a lot of great, important music.

Marty helped create the San Francisco music scene by opening the Matrix club, months before Chet Helms and Bill Graham launched their promotional careers. He later sold his share of the club, then left the Airplane and Starship at various times as well. An arty guy who stayed true to his principles.

- there was always something graceful about Marty Balin.

I wouldn't say always. I'm thinking about a brutal crack about Grace he made in a 1977 Crawdaddy! magazine cover story.

But that said, what a talent. The first group I ever saw live in person was the Airplane in 1967. What's forgotten today is how big they were in the late-60's, musically and as a counter-cultural force.

They played Miracles segueing into a commercial last night on Sunday Night football. A little tribute to Marty. SNF does that quite a bit. Producer Drew Escoff is a big rock and roll fan.

I think I might have missed Paul Kantner passing.
The JA were a very odd assembly of characters. Really odd. I am still not a major fan. This is not the place to go into that though.
Like his music or not - there was always something graceful about Marty Balin.

IIRC Grace Slick confessed somewhere that, among the Airplane members, Marty was the only one who didn’t have (or refused to have) a relationship with her — which tells you something.
