This is probably the best one, playing-wise.

Would have liked to hear it in the late 60s/early 70s, though, with the gear and the equipment they used back then.

Listen to Bill and Charlie (wow, he's great in the ending there!), for starters. Then visualise that you're listening to the whole band and its sound, instead of guitar licks or solos.

Then you might get there... smoking smiley

PS: I love the 69-75 versions as much as you. But playing-wise they were always more shaky than the Atlantic City-version. It's magnificent, despite the era and its 80s-treatment. The guitars and the rhythm section is like an octopus, and Mick's harp is hot, hot, hot.

I love the crazy 72 and 73 versions but probably the one from "Ya-Yas" is my favorite.
When the two guitars start the chug at 2:22 I get shivers EVERY time. My favorite part in Yaya MR is the faint rapping that Jagger does off mike during the fast part. Its distorted, probably through the harmonica.
I usually imagine it is those lines I read in one of my very first Stones books, where Dalton talks about them on stage; and he has Jagger calling out to a girl in the audience. Something like "Do you want me?", and then pointing at Keith "well do you want him?" and then "well F8ck you anyways..'. haha...it makes no sense.

Surprised so few people mention the roundhouse rambler.
It is one of their best live moments ever.

I did, and deservedly so, imo. It's unique, with its intro + that the playing might be superior to the Ya Yas-version. Absolutely stunning!

Truth is there ain't a bad Rambler!

One I particularly like is the Hyde Park 69 version, the live version we all love was already there, but it also still has the sexiness of the studio version.

How to pick? That's one song that's almost always great. I'm partial to Ya Ya's as it's the one that hit me first. Tokyo 1990 is very good. As for more recent ones, Havana Moon is very good. there's just too many.....

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

Wow, just listened to this version for the first time...quite interesting. The intro threw me for a loop until it kicked in proper.

Amazing sound quality and performance.

I'm sorry if I insulted you, I was referring to the music, not to you.

To date my fave is from GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! because it's just so gotdamn awesome.

Since someone mentioned it...

San Jose 1999
[www.youtube.com]

Pretty damn good... has a 1975-76 throwback (not really) with the Everybody say OW! bit.

Midnight Rambler is probably their most consistent live song of all time.

It's absolutely defining. It's the epitome of what The Rolling Stones are.

I've liked every live version I've ever heard. I can't say that about ANY other Stones song except Monkey Man.
