My favorite version is the one with the official video in the circus tent ( where charlie sinks in bubbles)
I always wondered if this playback could be the famous early version with bowie singing backing.
Anybody, who's got further information about this "video version"?

Keith's guitars are different takes, and one of Mick’s vocal tracks is different, too? The rest sounds identical to me..

We know that the original take, recorded by ronnie, mick and some friends at the wick, is partly used by the stones. Kenney jones plays drums, charlie only fakes in the video.
Keith deleted some guitar parts and the voice of bowie and did some overdubs.
But yes, micks voice is different as well.
So maybe they used the early version for the video??

Bowie can still be heard though.

Are you sure, RHC? I always thought LYL was Paris 76 and El Mocambo (Toronto) 77.

And this is where Mick uses the explicit version in Chicago 6-3-13... I always wait for it, and that night I got it!!

Love hearin' The Stones show a glimmer of the old rebel spirit like that!!

The Concert for New York remark was another moment that comes to mind...

Paris 98 (Stade de France), soundboard recording. Keith is really high in the mix. It's so bluesy, I love it.

Maybe the Love You Live version as that's the one I'm most familiar with, but no live versions are as good as the studio version.
It became kind of a joke during the Licks tour (and maybe before), and has always sounded a bit lame since then.

Agree. First heard it live on the Steel Wheels turn and it was lame. I actually thought it was lame when I first heard it on the radio. Have grown to like the studio version, which has more bite.

I remember it was played quite often on the radio along with the Bee Gees' Jive Talkin, Bowie's Fame, and other hits of '74/'75, and always loved the opening riff.
That was also around the time I bought my first Stones album Made in the Shade which had It's Only Rock'N'Roll on it, although it wasn't near the best on that album.
But whenever I hear the studio version today it takes me right back to those days, whereas whenever I see them play it live I can only shrug.

The one with Bowie and Kenney Jones on that they recorded at Ronnie's place. (Only joking - never heard it but it's near the top of my Holy Grail Stones' list.)

Listen closely to the studio version and your dreams might come true..

The studio is amazing. They could have continued in that direction on a few more. Dance little sister is perhaps an electric follow up. If tou cant rock me should have had that acoustic sound too perhaps. Two electric guitars and an acoustic. I love micks vocals but maybe a morediversified style?

I like IORR live.... because its the Stones playing , er RR.

That said the song they play on stage, at a faster tempo and in the key of B, is a totally different song from that loose swinging cut in E on the record.

..to the point where I've never really compared them on a which is better or worse basis.

Thee are many great versions of the song they play live.

The interesting bit is how and why it became a different song when the took it the stage ?

Early 2005 IORR. Extended show closer. Then 2002.

Australia 2014 wasn't bad for IORR but,2002 to 2005 .... it had it's best sound as far as the Stones live arrangement goes.

Some prefer L.A. Friday '75 however, that 1975 sound is somewhat rough but, with great guitar play.

And why the version in G rocks so hard...

The reason is, that the stones did not develope the song until they formed the live-version. The studio version is originally "ronnie and friends" as posted above. Same session as "I can feel the fire".

Love the album version but the live versions are just terrible. If they have to do that kind of song live, pension off IORR and revive @#$%&.
