Did "Dirty Work" inspire them to "Flip the Switch"?
Posted by: punkfloyd ()

Listening to a remastered version of the Dirty Work album and I notice the similarities between the song Dirty Work and Flip the Switch. To me, the tempo, melody and vocal delivery are strikingly similar. And the drums are way up on the mix on both. Of course ends very differently..but up to that point anyway.

Maybe it's the remaster, but I think Dirty Work is a great little tune in itself. Not a Stones classic, but it has aged pretty well without the cheesy 80s production found elsewhere on the album.

No. Flip The Switch is an entirely better tune.

I think the vocals on Dirty Work needed improvement.

They are both equally bad.

Both songs rock. DW has several musical elements. A more complex song.

I dont hear the similarities so much, except maybe the tempo. I'd choose Dirty Work over Flip The Switch, but both are rather good, yet somehow inconspicuous songs.
I have no problem with the production of the album Dirty Work really. I like it a lot better than the -in my opinion- muddy, stuffed, un-Stones sounding Bridges To Babylon sound.

Dirty Work was promising when first released as there's some nifty guitar playing, but the tune simply goes nowhere just after the half way mark, and then basically fizzles out with alot of nonsensical meanderings.

As for Flip the Switch - there's hints of a Stonesey vibe guitar-wise, but the lyrics are comical and it's pretty much garbage start to finish.

"I had the turkey
And the stuffing too
I even saved
A little bit for you..."

Thanks, but no thanks.

What you don't like this bit :

"Lethal injection is a luxury
I want to give it
To the whole jury"

That's a denunciation of US death penalty as clear as it can be, right?

You forgot:

Why Let Me Go, a mid-tempo rocker?

Flip the Switch is a good generic Stones rocker. Like Sparks Will Fly and Rough Justice. Nothing to complain about there.

Might as well toss in Mick's "Gotta Get a Grip" since it recycles a line from "Dirty Work."

Well the "let 'em eat cake" was Mick referencing Marie Antoinette. Rather appropriate considering he's the Master of Le Fourchette.

Yeah I doubt Keith would bother to quote entire song lyrics from the album in LIFE if he didn't know what it sounded like.

Flip the switch is one of their last good rockers. In fact it is one of their best songs or at least up tempos since She was hot.

Thanks, but no thanks.

It’s so bad it’s almost hard to believe.

“I even got myself a little shaving kit!!” A good producer would’ve begged them not to release this piece of shit.i know it’s a Keith song and there are people who would cheer at the sound of him breaking wind but come on,this is terrible.
Lame riff and embarrassing lyrics.
This and Bigger Bang are the reasons I hope they never record another album, ever.

I fail to understand how one can slag off such fine songs like FTS and DW. They're both perfect, sleazy, angry, hope-inspiring and clever tunes. I can have 'em both all night long. There is nothing in the world like listening to Flip The Switch, knowing soon you'll be bordering a plane to go to a place where there's a lot of fun…….....

There's a spoof-like quality to Flip the Switch, as if a group of comedians decided to record a song in a similar vein to Stones music.
It's actually almost a mockery, but the reality is it's actually the Stones themselves playing it - one of the low points of the latter era imo.

It was great reading about our Teddy being there while they recorded Flip The Switch the old school Stones-way.

Love both Flip The Switch and the song Dirty Work. Great rockers.

I hated it at the time of its release but i dont hate it now. Of course it is crap compared to their 1962-1983 material.

Personally, I love "Flip the Switch" and "Sparks Will Fly" despite its crying sharks. When it comes to lyrics, even the classics have groaners or head-scratching moments whether it's "I'm not no mad-brained bear" or "Mad bull lost his way" or laying "traps for troubadours" or Mick confusing hackles with shackles in "Crazy Mama." That last example might have struck them as humorous or maybe it was an honest mistake. The point is if you've hit the point that a stray line stops you in your tracks then "nothing they do don't seem to work" for you.
