Do the Stones cause you cognitive dissonance?
Posted by: peoplewitheyes ()

Jeroen's comment in the Black n Blue thread got me thinking.

Do you experience cognitive dissonance with the womanising, druggie, rebellious Stones as your favourite band?

I personally don't have a problem with most of their behaviour, and given the chance I would probably have loved to have done the same in their situation.

(maybe not major heroin addiction or marrying a 15 year old, mind, or beating up a teenage Russian hooker)

I'm not down with supposedly battering women for a few press headlines, though.

NOTE
"cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values."

No, they don't. I admire them for what they've been doing. Never felt that cringe factor at all.

Sure. It made me return the "Some Girls" album back in 1978 and not even listen to the "Undercover" album, but that was because of the albums per se. I don`t read Stones bios simply `cause I don`t want to know. They may have a rumour for being "the worst", but the competition in that respect is so hard, making that part of them very often evaporate.

hey noughties, why did you return the SG album? For Mick's opinion of black girls? Or 'heroin with the president'? And what about Undercover? Did the cover art put you off?

Eh, a little but not much. I don't idolize them so their personal lives are their own. I live a pretty straight-laced existence so, if anything, I live vicariously through the seedier aspects of their music and lyrics.

Well, rock and roll isn't church music exactly. They were, like most rock bands, seen as rebels when they started out.
The tough thing, I guess, is to grow old as a rebel. Which, maybe, implies not growing old at all.

.
Perhaps the definition ["cognitive dissonance"] is a bit too technical or extreme, thereby leading the fan more likely to answer with a simple "no" rather than to researching whether shades of that phenomenon do occur in our existence as Stones fans.

My basic character traits have often been misjudged once people knew how intense and devoted a Stones fan I am, always with reference to the [uncivilized] image the Stones had. And since no obvious similarities or imitations could be found, it was the contradiction that puzzled many non-fans. Some even came up with the theory that I am fascinated by the Stones because they had the [wild, dirty and sinful] life I would have liked to lead, subconciously speaking. It is all BS. I have met so many hardcore fans through the decades and found not a single personal trait we all share except for this common, amazing, eternal passion for the Stones' MUSIC. Its positive effect on our moods and our states of mind is void of any contradiction or dissonance, you could almost call it a religion we can always turn to.

As a loyal but also free-thinking fan I continue to listen and enjoy every song, no matter how politically incorrect some lyrics were later considered by the media or by hypocritical, younger generations. "Under My Thumb" remains one of my all-time favourites and I was sorry to notice Jagger's alterations to the lyrics on the No Filter Tour.

Yes,they make me want to go to my safe space and pet puppies.the Stones commit too many micro aggressions for me to handle but if I spend enough quiet time in a room filled with pillows and play dough I can recover given enough time.

Only if you take them seriously...because the Stones are the first people that get the joke.

Yeah, it was Mick`s opinion of black girls on top of the very hard, punklike music that made it all a bit over the top for me + the undercover art cover together with just a glance of the song titles. At this board you sometimes get an almost hysterical defence of the "sex, drugs and rock´nroll" -thing as soon as you say something like this. It is indeed something of a dissonance connected with "the [wild, dirty and sinful] life" to qoute TIRED. However, this may be something of the past and now they`re sort of a family band.

They had the looks and the fame, which meant "free" access to the women.

In some ways I moved on spiritually. I idealized the Stones when I was younger. To my taste they are too full of themselves, by now they are posing with all kinds of celebrities. Yet they have had their fun, of course they faced temptations to which it is hard to resist. I wish them the best, but I do not need another Keith Richards interview in which he laughs all the time and tells the same old stories.

Mama's arms used to hold me
How it helped when I went wrong
The other women in my life
Helped me sing the hurtin' song

This old piano is my best friend
The old stage is my home
Ya' think I've got it made, friend?
Well let me show you where you're wrong

Change places with me
Just let me sit at your table
I'll pretend that I'm you
Then I can do the things
That you so freely do

Pretend that you're me
And sing 'em all them old sad songs
You stand accused
Let the world look at you
Change places with me

Ya gotta play that old piano
Sing the songs they want to hear
At first it won't come easy
I've been doing it for years

Ya gotta sing them songs with feelin', son
After all the feeling's gone
Ya think I've got it made friend
Well, let me show you where you're wrong

Change places with me
Just let me sit at your table
I'll pretend that I'm a-you
Then I can do the things
That you so freely do

Pretend that you're me
Sing them old sad songs
Brother, you stand accused
Let the world look at you
Change places with me

Hey, brother you stand accused
Let the world look at you
Change places with me.

I've thought about that in relation to the racial lyrics in "Brown Sugar" and "Sweet Black Angel". Of course, it has been pointed out that both of these songs carry with them certain historical contexts, "Brown Sugar" having also drug related double contexts(?) and "Sweet Black Angel" being a tribute to Angela Davis.

people often compare rock stars with real life, i did it myself when i was young, hated the sex pistols because i didnt want to understand why they had to look like that. yet when i got older i realised it was people challenging the system, that i believed to be correct. The system was correct because my teachers and parents told me it was and to respect my elders. As it turned out, john lydon exposed jimmy savilles vile ways and the bbc,s cover ups.

Rock stars act in a way, write certain lyrics and get critisised for being over the top, controversial etc, but when actors play the part of a baddie, they are considered good actors. rock,n roll aint real life, rock stars are actors too, they dress the part, write the songs and still get critisism for lyrics, yet news readers dont get critisised for reading bad news, which is exactly what rock stars are doing, they make the lyrics to portray a story, it dosent mean they agree with what they are writing, they are only writing what they see in society.

the stones fit into all of this too, with a lot of songs, all of societys ills were not created by jaggers lyrics, they were already there.

as for the bands personal life, there is a lot they should be embarrassed about, i wont list because we all know.

but as a band, they are just being actors, they are not like that in real life, not all of the time anyway.

What is the teenage Russian hooker story???

Not pretending they're good people all the time or anything, but the thing is has anyone here ever been treated like you were semi-divine? I'm not talking about one day, but every day by everyone you meet? After awhile you start to believe it to an extent. Even if you don't become a raging maniac, you take what's offered your way because it's there and people are willing and they want to please. No matter how much you love your spouse, put in those shoes you might be tempted. No matter how smart you are about knowing your limitations, knowing you can have anything now and it's the best quality available and you might indulge. It's very easy to judge harshly a situation you've never been in. You might think you know yourself, but you don't know yourself sitting on top of the world.

It's a reference to Kat (the young woman Ronnie left Jo for). Her age and her true profession are the subject of tabloid speculation. Most sources say she was legal and a cocktail waitress. Others suggest she was really younger and a prostitute. Ana, who was in between Kat and Sally, was portrayed as a high-priced escort by some. The thing is there are people who would describe actresses and models the same way. It's an ugly world. From what I understand Ana would not have described herself as an escort, highly-paid or otherwise.

And what about the "beating up" part? (I know I missed most of this story.)

If all events, stories or things around the stones didn't exist, the stones won't be the stones, that's all. It's music + their way of life!
