The Black & Blue Cover is not only one of the Stones' finest record covers but one of the best and most original covers in Rock album history. As a photographer, as much as a lifetime Stones fan, I find the photograph simply excellent, portraying with true originality the bold, in-your-face Stones, stripped of all the bs and imposed vanity, long before that trend became fashionable. I also find the cover a perfect match to the songs on Black&Blue, and an honest commitment to the brand-new member Ronnie.

The double-LP format was probably even chosen just to give this amazing group photo the chance to be used commercially, just as taken by Hiro (except for some strip cuts top and bottom).

Interestingly so, the photos were taken only 2 months before the release of the album - quite unthinkable timing nowadays.

The individual portraits taken during or around that same session were first published in the album's sheet music booklet that was released shortly after the LP, printed on excellent high gloss paper. As far as I know that booklet was never re-issued.

The large book by TASCHEN also contains several photos from that session (some of which already reproduced in this forum).

The first time I was in the area, I made sure to visit Sanibel Island as the location of that historic photo shoot.

Well, I may have overstated it but on the cover of the Japanese Fool To Cry/Crazy Mama 45 posted by exilestones above it basically says 'with Ron Wood now an official member the Stones are back and they're better than ever.'

He was a disciple of Richard Avedon.
He created the cover with the art director Bea Fleiter - Brazilian designer and art director.

Amazing photos...Mick looks so trashed. You can really see the effects partying took, particularly around the eyes. He looked younger during the Steel Wheels tour.
