Fair cool smiley

No data to dispute being wrong about sellouts for as long as you've been predicting the Doom and Gloom? Hurl insults. That'll teach 'em.

We all know what you get. You can complain about it or just go out and have a great night.

Regarding sellouts, Giants Stadium 05 - 70,000 and 06 - 49,000. Both are sellouts. In 06 the upper deck was tarped out on both sides from the 50yrd line to the back. What is purpose of the tarps? Why is it a sellout?

This business of calling a show "sold out" when it's clearly below capacity is nothing new. Just block off sections, or don't put them for sale, and when you only sell 80% of the venue, just say "well that 20% was never onsale anyway". I agree it's stupid, but the business seems to have worked this way since sometime in the early '00s.

There were tickets available for ALL the Zip Code shows right up until the day of the show. Most were probably not "sold out", but were close enough that nobody noticed. You can play a 50,000 seat stadium, sell 40,000 tickets, and still make it look full depending on where you put those 40,000. The Stones don't need to draw 80,000 people to Denver to have a sellout... they just need about 40-45,000 to make the stadium appear sold out.

I looked up official figures of U2, Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, Springsteen and even the Stones themselves, and an end stage concert at Giants Stadium seemed to cap out at around 55,000. The only one bigger than that was U2 360 in 2009, where they played to 80,000 per night using the entire stadium twice. So the Stones only drew 49,000 to Giants in 2006, but that's really not too bad.

There have been many tarped shows that haven't sold out throughout the years despite what the faithful cheerleaders will have you believe.
Nowadays they have price drops and can dump unsold tickets back into the "Lucky Dip" pot as they did for some No Filter shows, and if that fails they can resort to selling on discount sites such as Groupon and Costco.
Still doesn't guarantee a sell out, but it might save them some embarrassment from having entire sections tarped off.

That explains alot, and dispels some of the mythology of a "sold out" show - the term has become somewhat meaningless.

But why tarp the place if you can sell it out? More specifically lower the ticket prices, increase attendance, you come away with same money right?

It's hard to believe they could sell out a stadium in Los Angeles at primo prices these days. There's nothing new to sell. It's the never ending Greatest Hits tour, unless the new album has turned back time 30 years.

Los Angeles will be tough to sell out even if tickets are priced reasonably AND there's a new album that has turned the clock back 30 years - there's too many other alternatives for entertainment in L.A. for them to gouge fans too much. And no matter what the price, expect lots of discounts, price drops, selling tix via Costco, Groupon, etc. and scalpers getting stuck with inventory. But there's no way will they be as high as *Vegas '16 which were the highest priced US tickets ever maxing out at apprx. $800 for floor and all lower level - it was robbery. And even though it was an arena, they had trouble selling tix resulting in massive official price drops and scalpers desperately dumping tickets. In one sense it benefits those who are patient and/or on the fence, but why not make the tickets reasonable to begin with?

The Buffalo 15 show one shirt was jacked up $50!

It isn't that complicated really. Right now they are in "time off" mode. Mick is playing around with his stuff, and the others ditto. At the same time, there is a signal saying where they will be touring next. Promoters are working on venues, cities and offers, with their (The Rolling Stones) time frame in mind. Nothing is signed yet.

They toured North America in 2013 and 2015. Plus three public North America shows in 2012, same in 2016. Basically they haven't been performing in NYC, Chicago, Boston, Toronto since 2013 i.e. in six years when we look into the 2019 schedule. They could easily sell out 2-3 shows in each of the big cities, it is just a matter of where they want to go.

The Rolling Stones sell out shows everywhere they go. Every year, every tour. They sold out at record prices in Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, North America during 2012 to 2018. They will easily sell out all shows in North America for their next tour.

For those who want to discuss ticket prices and empty stadiums I will suggest doing that in separate threads. This thread is for rumours and facts about the next tour in North America. And after that, it seems like they might do Argentina, and after that, may be Japan, but first North America. Sold out for sure. And after that, I am sure they will be back to Europe, may be in 2022, 60 and counting.

I wouldn't be surprised at all that we will see shows in 2022. I would even bet for it. They have a nice (once again) winning formula with this 50 AND COUNTING thing, one or two 14 gig tours a year... seems to work for them taking their age and condition, and also seems to work for their big (casual) audiences to see them every few years, but not too often (it is a wide world). Everybody and everything remains fresh. In 2022 Jagger will be 79 - what's that any different than being 75?

Them releasing any new music has nothing to do with the shows selling out or not.

Easy, Tiger! Hairball's a huge Rolling Stones fan and everyone else on here is a fan to some degree. However, that doesn't mean he has to give absolutely every aspect of everything they do unquestioning and gushing high praise.

Being even handed is healthy. They need our (constructive) criticism as much as they need our praise. I too have my moans, the same a
s most and I won't list them here as not the place. But the pluses outweigh the minuses by a large margin and as long as that continues, I'm on the bus.
I'm a regular gig attending fan and saw 16 No Filter shows out of 28.

Pluses - Their level of performance, given their ages is phenomenal. They still put on a hell of a show.

The travelling, socialising and cameraderie amongst the fans and general event build up is fabulous. I repeatedly bumped into familiar faces all over the place and we help each other.

Lucky Dips - Yes the full ticket prices are OTT. But Lucky Dips, only really known about by the Die Hards address this issue and most LDs I've had were good to excellent with the odd baddie. I know of no other act who do Lucky Dips. The Stones introduced them, NOT their promoter. Hats off to them.

So I'm IN.

Getting on topic as is Bjornulf's wish, it's nice to hear some reasonably solid info about touring plans for North America next year. He's seldom wrong with these things. The liklehood of continuing beyond then elsewhere is good to read too. I've only ever visited North America once (for the Stones - Licks 2002) and I'd be tempted to see it again, especially if they do New York.

Oh I do hope note. There has to come a point where enough is enough. They should pack it before they embarrass themselves. The idea of the Stones in their 80s (or very close to them) playing massive stadium shows seems like a step too far. Please let them retire with the minimum of fanfare before they reach that point

I think they'll know when to stop. But based on recent performances, that time's yet to arrive.

Thanks for the update BV! I live in the States - I've loved seeing them in Europe and South America over the last couple years and think crowds are better there, but am ready to hit the road here next year. Let's hope there's some open seating (and a pit) in the stadiums here and that it's not all seats on the field like it usually is in the States. And if they can fit in MSG, that would be a bonus, but I expect it will be mostly, if not all, stadiums. And good news that Argentina is still on the board for the future!

Well, that's hard to say, really. However, the last time they had an album with original tunes out, they played four of those tracks (Rough Justice, Back Of My Hand, Infamy and Oh No, Not You Again). Rain Fall Down and It Won't Take Long were also in the setlist at some point. Streets Of Love, too.

The tours after Blue And Lonesome came out are the only ones where they played only two songs (and some times one) off their new album.

This may be what they're doing in the future, too, who knows - but we got no reason to establish that whatsoever. B&L was limited musically, and they might not have wanted to play a blues-heavy set on stadium gigs..

It's absolutely bonkers. Health permitting, I think they'll do it. In fact if health and level of performance permits, they'll go beyond that. They know how to pace themselves and get the best out of themselves.

I'll be there thumbs up.

There's an Interview somewhere of 22yo Mick on the BBC Michael Parkinson show from around 1965 when Parky asked him how long he thought the band would continue. Young Mick's tentative reply was that, "I think we are pretty well set up for the next year". grinning smiley

Usually? You mean going back 13 years to a Bigger Bang? They've toured countless times since then without a new album of originals.
They only played two, maybe three blues covers since Blue and Lonesome was released, so not sure what you mean by "usually".
