Var + a weak referee = the shambles tonight in the Iran v Portugal game. What a travesty. Although as I had 1-1 and that result put me up to 3rd so every cloud eh?

Vertigjoe, to discuss our IORR league is forbidden now. Read BV's post. Congrats, anyway! Over and out...

what the heck? So if a player is open field running down with the ball to (maybe) score a goal and the other team obviously trips him.... and the refs correctly award a free kick to the tripped player... but it is the end of the half... they dont get the free kick?

I (think I) saw this at the end of the Denmark V France game.

If Argentina does not get through to the round of 8... shocking?

The next round is of 16 and not 8. The game is played on merit and endeavour, not heritage and population. If you're a big country and you go out, tough! That's what sport's all about, or at least should be.

Australia, what a disappointment. Shouldn't they at least have the ambition to win matches? Congrats to our brother Denmark though who goes through to the final stages.Well done!
Poor Iran who was one kick away from kicking out Spain or Portugal from the World Cup. So close. Ronaldo should have been sent off by the way. Saved by the ref.
Missed a penalty he also did. Poorly executed.

Denmark - France was a poor game, and les Bleus were terribly disapointing me. No joy in playing football at all, no ambition, no nothing. As for Denmark, well, they were not better, but that was not to be expected anyway.

So the two are qualified, but no fun ...

Tactics, resotele. Often used in the third round. France needed one point to win the group. And Denmark needed one point to secure second place. So it was a draw. Hardly by coincidence...

They didn't need a point. But they didn't want to possibly face a blood-thirsty Argentina in the next round, either smiling smiley

Peru ended with it's head up! thumbs up

Agree bout Iran, they were very close.

Let's see what happens with Argentina, believe me a whole nation is nervous.

I haven't looked further in the final stage but had they lost to Denmark they would only have made it for second place in the group.
I don't know what that means in the further stages though. Sometimes it can be better no to win the group..

So we got the first bored 0 - 0 of the championship today.

I meant Denmark didn't need a point. As the match progressed they didn't make an extra effort to win, risking to face Argentina in the next round. Scandinavian teams usually get very good results against Croatia.

i didnt see the iran v portugal game or iran v morocco but did watch the highlights.

i heard that portugal got lucky again.

iran would have topped the group if they had scored the last minute effort.

peru done well, should have had at least 6 points and at least they had a go,

france and denmark bored the daylights out of me. they need to liven up.

its becoming very unpredictable this world cup, to difficult to predict a winner. every team has a weakness somewhere.

The thing is that teams that impress in the group stage don't always succeed in the final stages. And vice versa. That means that teams like Spain, France, Argentina and Germany, of course, will still
be favorites in the final stage. Even if they were an inch away from not making it in the group stage. Some teams like France and Italy have learnt how to master this in earlier championships.
You can't preserve form for seven games. That is the task to master.

Maybe, but neither Tunisia nor Panama are good value measures of a teams capacity. We will see when England faces some real challenges.

They’ve beaten 2 very weak sides and made a meal of one of them. Don’t get carried away. England and Belgium will face the winners and runners up of Group H, which is quite weak really. I think both will progress and come up against much tougher opponents in the Quarters, providing a stern test.

on to another afternoon and evening of hopefully fine football :

Mexico - Sweden : both want to win, probably, Mexico for 1 place in the group, and Sweden to maintain a chance for the next round

South Korea - Germany : Germany must win with as many goals possible (this could count if Seden wins ...)

and in the evening

Serbia - Brasil : Serbia will try to keep the chance for the next round. They will give Brasil a hard times

Switzerland - Costa Rica : Costa Rica is out, and the Swiss continue the tournament if they get at least a draw .... and do they want to win ? If so they may win the group stage, and therefore maybe meet Germany in dhe next round..

many possibilities, open games, so it might be thrilling ....

enjoy the games smileys with beer
