Very interesting what he says up till the idea that listeners can be brainwashed into liking bad music by constantly hearing the same song, and by implication that good music is instantly likeable. Sometimes the best music is very complicated and takes a long time -- many, many listenings -- to appreciate.

Why not with Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick and Tich who were one of the best selling singles acts in the UK from 1966-68?
Good music is still (and always will be) out there, but in this day and age with so much available you have to trust your ears.

Totally agree with you.. DIY creative artists are out there, making new music and playing their new songs live. Ticket prices and atmosphere are fantastic.

Now more than ever music is a "product", and that's the type of stuff he's talking about. But there's still plenty of music being made that's worth listening to.

Modern music is not crap. If you're expecting music from 1972 to reappear, you are delusional. Rock and roll is dead, except for an occasional burp here and there. There's plenty of good music our there from around the world, but you have to open your mind and your ears.

Modern music is always awful. It was awful in 1963 and it's awful now. It was probably awful in 1922 as well.

I cringe every time this thread comes up.

Even though I have my Favourite bands/genre, for me era's or style of music bear no relation to me liking it or not.

I don't mind who plays/sings it or the date it was first released.

I really enjoyed AAL and Beach House. I find Jon Hopkins latest to be worse than the previous one.

But back to the topic - I suppose the problem is as old as the Earth. Apparently we cannot learn from the previous generations' mistakes and accept that new stuff is not bad but it requires some effort from us to appreciate it.

Interesting comments here. I too think it's way too broad to say "modern music is awful" -- there has always been good music and shite, in every era of mankind -- but I think the guy's point is that the music that you hear on the radio and in shopping malls is usually shite and the good stuff rarely is heard.

That being said, some of the stuff that's popular is also very good IMO, e.g. ...

People always think they're being deep and edgy by spewing stodgy "get off my lawn" sentiments about how modern-day pop culture sucks.

If you think modern music is aweful, the problem is your attitude towards ‘new’ music, not the music itself. You’re probably stuck somewhere in time. Fine, but don’t blame the music...blame ageing.

As been stated, there was always good and bad. And also: what bad is for you can be really enjoyed by someone else.

The barely legal waitress let me know it was her choice and her playlist... So I'd tend to think bad music will always overwhelm good music and disco crap from the 80's can prevent young people from discovering good contemporary music.

Never even heard of these guys.

There are tons of older people now claiming the '80s was the greatest decade, when in the '90s it was considered a horribly garish and tasteless decade (neon colors, cheesy synthesizer music, tacky hair metal, etc.)

Everything happens in cycles. People become older and get nostalgic for their youth...it skews perceptions and you only tend to remember the good stuff.

Great live music everywhere, just none on the radio

Well that's a good point. Greta Van Fleet, for instance, might be young and new but they aren't really modern...they're decidedly retro in sound.

The radio is horrible. All the stations now are owned by the same company. No matter what the genre is, It's just the same few songs being played to death and it seems like every year the list gets narrower and narrower of what they'll play. Even the stones make more effort in mixing things up on their set list.
