I see the Rollin Stoned quite often here in London, and there's another UK tibute band called the Counterfeit Stones that I haven't seen in a long time now. Both are excellent, the sound is highly authentic, and both "camp" it up to just the right degree to make it a fun kind of "cabaret" show.

The guy that plays Brian Jones in the Rollin Stoned left the Counterfeits to start the Stoned.

In Norway there are several good tribute-bands: Wazoo, brilliant, with a singer who actually looks like Mick 30 years ago... And Little Boy Blue and The Blue Boys (with copies of amps, instruments, clothes etc, and an eccentric dutchman on lead vocals whi THINKS he IS Jagger). Midnight Ramblers (They open every show with @#$%& Blues!) and The Rolling Clones. The four of them have a very different way of approaching the material, and saying who's best - well, that's a tough one.

Yeah the Rollin' Stoned are a great tribute. They play at the Half Moon, where I live, in Putney, London, every 2 or 3 months, always sold out, always a great show.

The guy who plays Brian Jones, a man called Michel, used to be in the Counterfeit Stones, a bigger but less authentic tribute.

Stoned from hungary are very good! They seem to be a bunch of nice people, also! This summer I almost managed to play harmonica in a few numbers with them, but I got their mail too late...... next time! Keep rocking, guys!

The Counterfeit Stones are very good. It's more of a show than a concert though. There is a lot of acting involved and it's all very "staged"

They're show starts from the very beginning of the Stones career and goes right up to include the monster stadium filling band they are today.

Not only does the show start musically from the beginning, but also member-wise too. The show is split into three periods. The first, with Brian Jones, then Mick Taylor and finally Ronnie. The same guy does all three characters.

Seriously though, it's a cracking show. If you’re a history buff and a snob, then you'll pick up on the odd mistake, but it's all meant to be fun. They put on a really, really good show.

Believe it or not, I've never ever seen a "rolling stones tribute band".
I've never heard of one even existing here in Milano.
Further: I've hardly ever heard a cover band play a stones song, and if so it is only the odd choice satisfaction.

I think it's great if artists cover songs from some of the greats, but just playing someone else's music seems kind of dull. No matter how good you are at it. They keep playing a lot of the same songs they didn't even write. Even Guns 'n Roses did too much Stones songs if you ask me.

Tribute bands are ok until they don't take themselves too serious...
And if it is so, it's fun to see them...

I agree. Never understood the appeal for tribute bands but apparently they are hugely popular. Perhaps someone can answer this for me. At the Mick Taylor show in London in August '03, I noticed a guy that looked like Keith from 1969 and the lady he was with looked a lot like Anita. I figured he might be with one of those tribute bands. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

Stikky Fingers are pretty good. Check out the Shidoobee tribute CDs called "Street Fighting Fans". There's 2 volumes so far I think. Some are pretty good. And I'm on vol. 2 with Lorenz. grinning smiley

The best tribute band is Stones Pure from Austria. If you dont believe, come and see the next live gig.evry guy in the band could help the stones out, if they need a substitute to play a concert. the only thing is, they look much better than their relative rolling stone. www.stonespure.com

Dear too tough with your hidden e-mail adress: A lot more people love listen to live music and specially stones music than can attend a stones live concert or afford a ticket. maybe you sit at home all the time an masturbate in front of your stereo playing stones albums or whatsoever. Thats like eatin canned food. If you are satisfied with it, its your cup of tea.
So tribute bands fill a very important function. The problem is that almost every dude who knows 3 riffs on the guitar try to do it, because he thinks it`s easy to play stones-music. But I tell you it isn`t - the more you dig into it, the more you learn how complex their songs are. I have seen lots of bands doing stones-songs badly but the average audience was nevertheless pleased, so I think there is need for tribute bands, if they take it serous and do their job well.

I'd say Blushing Brides or Nasty Habits, but those are the only ones I've seen, so what's that worth if I can't compare them to anyone else?

Well Liddas, my favourites are the Counterfeit Stones. They're very tongue in cheek, but they're excellent musicians as well.

My band Stikkyfingers don't dress up as the Stones, so we're not really a tribute band, but if you want to hear what a Stones cover band sounds like then click on the songs in my signature. They're our versions of classic Stones songs.

Let me know what you think!

Regards,

Ian.

I've only seen the Blushing Brides back in the 80's. They were fun.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

If you live near Pittsburgh, these guys are decent:

I caught their show a few months ago at a downtown pub. Pretty good, especially considering the cover was free. They look nothing like the Stones but the singer does a pretty good Mick impression. They played for 3 hours (30 songs). The setlist included most of the big hits plus stuff like Midnight Rambler, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Monkey Man, etc. It was a fun night out.
