OT: Springsteen's Darkness - It was 40 years ago today...

My, my, how time flies. Still one of my fave albums by Springsteen or anybody. I would love to read something like this regarding Stones albums and what the music and lyrics reflect in terms of the time the album was released, comparison to prior releases, etc. I'm sure this has been already done here at IORR in a way through various threads.

And, of course, Some Girls came out 40 years ago this month and Miss You (ugh, disco) was already moving up the pop charts. Both albums were the soundtrack of Summer '78. I was 24, living on US East Coast, and also starting to dig the Ramones and what followed in the punk New Wave front. I grew up in great time to be rock fan. Saw Stones, Bruce and the Who that Summer.

All of those are very easy bootleg torrents to find. And Roxy is gonna be released next month as his archive release to mark that anniversary. If you want any of them let me know.

Thanks for your kind offer and the info regarding The Roxy.
I have the bootlegs from the shows, but I was hoping for better versions.
Just goes to prove that I am somewhat naive at times...

Bruce has picked up the pace on releasing archive shows over the last year or so. It seems like there's a new old live show every month or so. And they're aces, and not obvious choices. The last one was a solo show from his old Catholic school from '96; next up is the first complete River show from 2009.

Its the first Friday of every month. Its an improvement. Still not perfect but it'll never be with Bruce and his team.

As for the 78 radio broadcasts, yeah upgrades would be great but what Sirius plays are just the famous bootlegs we all have. They don't ever play anything exclusive. Weird thing they do but whatever. At least we're getting the Roxy officially next month. Its long overdue, even though we have a lot of it on the Live 75-85 box set.

The Who? That was the summer before Keith Moon died. They weren't playing out that year.

The Who did that terrible Kilburn show in 12/77 and a rerecording of Baba O and WGFA for The Kids Are Alright at Shepperton in 5/78. Then Moon died in 9/78 and they came back the next year with Kenney Jones, Rabbit and a horn section. Those '79 Who shows were quite good. Pete really seemed invigorated by having a drummer who kept time.

In the summer of 79, I was walking east on Central Park South on the way to see The Kids Are Alright at a movie theatre nearby, when Bruce came walking up the sidewalk going west. He seemed in a hurry. So we didn't try to talk with him. It would have been when he was recording The Ties That Bind/The River.

I caught two as well, the first being his first headlining show at MSG (8/21/78) in NYC. He was truly the conquering hick that night. I've seen him 40 times, but I've never seen him better than he was that night. The second was his return to the Cap Centre outside DC (11/2/78), a night in the life of a really good band.

He should release a River 81 show before too long, either a Europe show, one from the opening of Meadowlands Arena, or the LA veterans show.

Mine was similar:

Some Girls
This Year's Model
Pure Pop for Now People
Darkness
David Johansen
Rocket to Russia (still in rotation)
Never Mind the Bollocks (still in rotation)
Misfits
Who Are You
Out on Bail (out a month after the Passaic, NJ show)

In the NYC metro area, that summer was dominated by Some Girls and Darkness.

I hope we will get the true live version; they patched "Hungry Heart" on last Friday's release...

Do tell. What heinous flub was chopped? Those releases have been warts and all.

I wait for the CDs of the Springsteen archival releases and haven't received the River 09 show yet.

Back in 2009 Bruce mixed up the lyrics to "Hungry Heart",
but on this month's release they are fine!

Got the CDs yesterday and compared Hungry Heart to an audience recording of that show. In the audience recording, the audience sang the first verse, and Bruce mangles about half of the second. On the released version, the second verse sounds fine. But he left the off-key kid audible.
