Keith's Guitar on Gimme Shelter

Believe that GS is typically in Open E tuning, correct?

In recent years Keith has been playing Shelter on a Les Paul Jr. which he seems to use for other songs in standard tuning though, and when I watch videos while the intro seems to be played the same as in Open E tuning, some of the licks look like they're in standard.

Clearly one of the above is wrong, just wondering if anyone could shed some light?

Studio recording is Open E, live is standard.

It has always been in standard tuning in concert.

However, he has played the riff differently on stage.

In 1989/90 and in 1992/93 he chose to play it in the I-V-formation, starting at the sixth fret. Especially with the Winos he made it sound a bit more similar to the original that way.

It's not as one-dimensional as he plays it now.
