I am thankful for King George III (and his Dad), the kings of England, for being such a jerk. The facts of his Royal Jerkness were submitted to the world about how he refused Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He forbid his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he utterly neglected to attend to them. He refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.... and a bunch of other jerk stuff... [www.ushistory.org]

... because without King George III (and his Dad) being such utter jerks, the people living in the colonies back in the 1770s would not have gotten so pissed off and declared Independence... and my country never would have been created.

Thanks George III, ya Royal Jerk!

Some important area of English contribution is almost forgotten here. Let me pick up a few names:

William of Occam ("No more bullshitting - Keef, you too")
John Locke ("Let's be liberal: mind your own business, and I do mine. Jagger, don't take that that literally, son!")
Isaac Newton ("Keith Richards felt down from tree? I have a good theory to explain why.")
Charles Darwin ("You think Brian Jones founded them? No, I tell you a much funnier story of the Origin of the Stones")

Abel Tasman got there 142 years before Cook but the Polynesians got there 500 years before that.
