Strangest Stones album besides TSMR (and why)

I would say Some Girls because nothing in the Stones catalog sounds quite like this.

Your thoughts?

Dirty Work…? no other Stones record is less worthwhile listening

If it counts as a Stones album, Jamming with Edward
Where's Keith?

black and blue is a bit strange.

a bit weak and only 8 songs.

yet they were very active in the studio in those days, so why didnt they add in a couple of extra songs to make it a 10 song album just like the norm.

It was the norm! Albums were generally 45 mins, B&B is closer to 50 I think, it went (back then) by length of time that would fit on the vinyl ... and despite my lack of love for Fool To Cry, to me it's a fantastic album!!

"Strangest" Stones album would probably be a goofy Decca compilation, like "Stone Age" and "Rock N Rolling Stones" (for the titles and covers) or "Gimme Shelter." (Soundtrack? Not really...)

"Metamorphosis" could be the strangest cover.

k.d. lang's songwriting credit on "Has Anyone Seen My Baby" is one of the stranger things on a Stones album.

For me it is Between the Buttons because it has so many songs I like but the songs are rarely played live. So I always wonder why Connection but not Miss Amanda Jones or Please Go Home or ....

I think that when you compare the Stones with most other bands , "Strange" for our chaps is probably the norm.

Their longevity and the wide range of genres they've dabbled with and integrated into the sound of the Stones has resulted in a widely eclectic catalogue.

The great wonder for me is that it always still sounds like the Stones...

... and they can still get away with almost anything winking smiley

Black and blue is the only Stones album I never "got" or even like that much. I have tried many times, but nothing seems to stick with me. Hand of fate is the exception, and maybe I wanna hold you. I almost never listen to that album.

Voodoo Lounge - an album of two halves (CD not the double album!) if ever there was one. Most of the first 7 songs are pretty decent. Nearly all of the next 7 are pretty dire with the exception of Thru & Thru.

Bridges to Babylon........it's like a composite of solo tracks, or maybe that's my flawed logic.

Yes. ER and SG are kinda like twins or cousins - though as always one is superior to the other.

i know with black and blue, they only did 8 songs due to the length of available time to fit on vinyl, couldnt they have just cut the length of time of other songs and added in a couple more.

the previous album its only rock and roll had 10 songs and still had a couple of songs that were lengthy, as did beggars.

They're all kinda strange. Tattoo You with its lovely but unusual ballad side, Dirty Work in that it is mostly awful, ABB with its weird maxed-out compressed sound, Steel Wheels sounds like it was recorded in an elevator shaft, E.R. has that vocal-buried-in-the-mix punk sound that I LOVE (!!)... I could go on. Every record has a surprise.

Between the Buttons: it's the Stones making a Kinks record.

"Strange" is perhaps not the word, but Aftermath stands out in a way. There's nothing like it in their catalogue - and I love it.

To this day, I have not found a whole album "strange". Certain songs, yes, like Continental Drift.

May be Sticky Fingers was so dark and moody that it was surprising ; but the real fans knew that the Stones of early 70's were into nihilism and exploring the dark side of life.

Black and Blue, which I love but at the time seemed to have some very un-Stonsey songs: Hot Stuff, Cherry, Fool, Memory...

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

Great topic:

Bridges to Babylon is twisted .. and odd / sort of strange in ways.

Goats Head Soup is a bit strange...different.

Emotional Rescue

Black and Blue . because it isn't the norm .. is sort of a weak effort .. and only 8 songs.

and Between The Buttons.

While every Stones album has it's own individual sort of thing .. and vibe or sound these are the ones that are the most odd IMO.
