A lot of rock stars owe a big thank you to the Stones. They are the ones that pushed the idea that a band can still play when they are old. The Stones were made fun of as far back as 1978 for it. Because they endured all of it and kept going now bands like U@ and every other band just keeps going and nobody questions it.

The Stones' longevity is even more unprecedented if you factor in the pre-modern tours, like 1792.

Is longevity always a good thing one might ask? They kind of ran out of good material some forty plus years ago... (just a philosophical question...). And how do you count all those years in between when they did nothing?

some bands have a life span of 12 or so years regarding recording, then they play a 50th anniversary tour and are then thought of as a band that lasted 50 years.

the stones are different in that respect, their workrate and output has lightened as the decades have past, but in the first 30 years of their career, there only was a gap of 3 years between studio albums at the most.

compare that to the who, zep and a few others to realize what the stones done.

The Rolling Stones longevity unprecedented with stats. that keep on a changin' with another update next month.
But hey what an inspiration this group of 7 great musicians has been and still is with the band going into it's 56th year..smileys with beer

Great topic !
Not really a big deal at all, but aren't they already well into their 56th year? And as such soon going into their 57th year? That is: as of July 12, 2018 (or July 7, wasn't that the day of the notorious phone call?)
Never mind cool smiley
Great topic smileys with beer

Actually it's 'Bulbarian" winking smiley LOL
I was looking at the map too, and had questions about Russia shows.
It is surprising that there is only one show ever on the African continent. Cairo and somewhere in Morocco should be a good audience. But more than that they could be going out as ambassadors; play for free, or cheap, in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria etc

Not just longevity, but extremely good quality product (studio and live) for the great majority of that time.

Re: The Rolling Stones Longevity Unprecedented
Posted by: Stoneage ()

I wouldn't concur with that, Elmo. The Rolling Stones peaked somewhere in the late seventies. The 1981-82 tour sort of crowned that era. Since then it hasn't really been the same. I'm trying to be honest here...

...Not trying to take away anything from Colonial's splendid graphics though. Very well done! I'm sure it took a great deal of effort to compile.

I would agree, Stoneage, with the caveat of the live shows remaining excellent

Some countries strangely not played : Philippines, Thaïland, South Korea and Iceland. Especially the last two ones.

Research into hundreds of Stones songs I started noticing the amount of times Knife was used in lyrics so I took a few notes and something like 12 songs had it in..not a big deal but interesting still the same
