With the earth's population doubling every 50 years (give or take), i find it hard to imagine there will be enough resources left to make life on earth worth living in another 200 years, especially for us homo-sapiens. For that reason alone i think Hawking has it just about right with his prediction.

Yes, agreed - but maybe it would have been nice if Stephen Hawking had also found a solution for this issue ....

The solutions are depressing at best. Various methods of depopulation, the elite will no doubt take responsibility for our fate with some sort of controlled Orwellian game plan. Agenda 21 and 2030 agenda spring to mind, reading between the lines life will become boring to say the least. Control in the name of environmental issues. The best of days are unfortunately behind us.

Something quite wrong there.

Don't associate a genius with the name of a sportsman, that's gross. Say "Stephen Hawking had Charcot disease". That's more classy! grinning smiley

He had ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

In 1963 age 21 Doctors gave Hawking two years to live.

He really was a miracle of a man in many ways.

hawking was a very clever man indeed, but i just didnt agree with everything he said.

there are 3 types of people in this world

1. those that agree with everything they are told without any thought to asking if what they are being told is correct.

2. those that question everything, even when the obvious is true.

3. those that look at everything objectively, ask questions about things they dont understand but look to gain their own understanding.

i think with hawking a lot of people fell into catagory 1, as many people believed everything he said, i never understood his assumption of hawking radiation that comes from a black hole and have even questioned if black holes exist, the question of anti matter and dark matter is not easy to believe too.

also einstiens theory of relativity e=mc2 i dont get either, it contradicts newtons laws of basic physics.

another theory astronomers come up with is time and space bending each other, what rubbish.

You are entitled to your opinion. On the other hand you should think about being a bit more respectful towards someone who was a world renowned scientist. He achieved a great deal of success in spite of living with a debilitating illness for over 50 years. Have you actually bothered to read 'A Brief History Of Time'. I don't think so!

Lou Gehrig did not have Lou Gehrig's disease. Think about it.
fwiw I think the big bang theory of Hawking (mostly) is ridiculous.

The thing is they are all THEORY'S, the science community is a very single minded community, people like Hugh Everett who thought outside of the general consensus of Einstein and Bohr were ridiculed and that attitude still prevails today. I agree with a lot of what you are saying.

Something quite wrong there.

Sort of.

But he actually was awarded the Companion of Honour which is a FAR greater and more selective honour.

I'm surprised that we're this far into honouring this great man, and not one person has so far mentioned the recent Rolling Stones album called 'A Bigger Bang'.

At the time of its release the band put out a press release about how it had that title because it reflected the band members' ongoing interest in Cosmology (or some such impossible nonsense).

So there is a small On Topic link to The Rolling Stones.

(I too loved Hawking's contribution to 'Big Bang Theory' - most amusingly a recent episode where a prototype toy radio controlled model of Hawking in a wheelchair was condemned by most people as being in the worst possible taste.. until a contribution from Hawking mentioned that he'd always thought it was a pity that a toy like that didn't exist. Wonderfully self deprecating stuff.)

Upon it's release, Hawking theorized that the ABB album was a big turd made up of nonsensical data which over time has proven to be the correct analysis.

No,no, no,no,no!—-to you and the “200 years” people... How quickly you have forgotten! Put on your dancing shoes. God’s got it all under control. He IS creating a new Heaven and a new earth for us.We don’t have to do it. But, in the meantime, He’s gonna rule the world for a thousand years on earth before that. Between now and that 1000 year reign, it’ll get bad for a short time, but God, the Creator of the universe, will come. He can make all things new. Without Him, we would wipe ourselves out. Thankfully, He’s in control of all of His creation and He told us what to expect. I hope SH is seeing the universe he studied. I see he acknowledged God. He (SH) is a great mind. But, no human can compare to the Creator, God, and what He says about the universe.

Anyway, as Mick says, don’t buy into all that doom and gloom, when Hope remains. Peace and Hope be with you. Keep dancing. God is ultimately in control. Bad things happen because darkness remains on the earth for a short time longer. Our best days are ahead of us, though! I hope SH had a wonderful send-off.

A propos The Rolling Stones and cosmology: Bill Wyman is the only Stone I have heard declaring an active interest in astronomy or cosmology.

Stephen Hawkings was a socialist and therefore turned down a knighthood.

There is very little talk about what Hawkings actually achieved in science. By time he became more of a scientific celebrity than anything else. His handicap contributing to this. Apparently it was his research in the early 70s about black holes that gave him a name in science. Hence the name "Hawking radiation" (from black holes).

RIP Stephen Hawking.

I think he should be remembered and hononured for, at least, three things (in order):

(1) A great human being - an inspiring example for all of us about the power of human mind and will, no matter how tragical the physical and bodial circumstances are. A fighter indeed.

(2) A great symbol of science. If in anything he was a genius, he was that in popularizing science, that is, was able to redescribe the highly complex and theoretical stuff in vocabulary is accessible to non-professionals. The whole science community gains a lot from that.

(3) A great scientist. His contribution to cosmology was not far from the level of Nobel.

Don't understand. Can you explain that? As far as I know Alfred Nobel wasn't a cosmologist.

If you meant something about 'deserving a Nobel', then the main reason he never got one was that they don't give prizes to theories, they give prizes to proven things, and even Hawking agreed that everything he did was theoretical and yet to be unequivocally proved by experiment or observation.

That's the reason why Albert Einstein never got the Nobel Prize for his Theory of Relativity - but he got the Nobel Prize justifiably for his discovery of the law of the Photoelectric Effect.

why do you say that ? without that approach, no GPS man. The fact that we do not see or feel that bending in our human scale does not mean that it could be false at largest universe scale.
