Always thought it was a Jimi original..
William Moses "Billy" Roberts Jr. (born August 16, 1936, Greenville, South Carolina) is an American songwriter and musician credited with composing the 1960s rock music standard "Hey Joe" (of which the best-known version is the hit by The Jimi Hendrix Experience).

Thanks, Billy Roberts indeed! And his original version is still being kept from the public, right?
I like the Byrds's take on it with Crosby on lead vocals - from their Fifth Dimension-album.

Several years ago, the American Idol TV show had a theme episode of "60s British Rock." One of the tunes that contestants had to sing was "You Really Got Me."
A co-worker the next morning and I were talking about the previous night's show, and she said, "I got so upset, they got it ALL wrong!! 'You Really Got Me' is not 60s British, it's a VAN HALEN song, for crying out loud!!!"
All I could do was sadly shake my head and sigh......
