The Byrds did it before Hendrix?

I still don't know the songwriter's name, though smiling smiley

"Hey Joe" is a song written by Billy Roberts and first recorded by The Leaves, originally released as a single in November 1965.

Always thought it was a Jimi original..

William Moses "Billy" Roberts Jr. (born August 16, 1936, Greenville, South Carolina) is an American songwriter and musician credited with composing the 1960s rock music standard "Hey Joe" (of which the best-known version is the hit by The Jimi Hendrix Experience).

Thanks, Billy Roberts indeed! And his original version is still being kept from the public, right?

I like the Byrds's take on it with Crosby on lead vocals - from their Fifth Dimension-album.

I almost mentioned Satisfaction due to the large number of people in the 60's who thought it was an Otis Redding song that the Stones covered.

One I left off my list (that drove me crazy for a while in the mid 90's) was "Dixie Chicken" as a Garth Brooks song. Based on the blank stares I would receive, I thought I was living through part of a zombie apocalypse when I would tell people it was "a Little Feat song"

Peace,
Mr DJA

Here's a nice trashy garage rock version from the Standells with a slightly altered title, 1966. The Standells - Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go ?

And a trippier slower version from the Music Machine also 1966 : The Music Machine -Hey Joe

While those are somewhat interesting, nothing matches the Hendrix version imo, but this version from Wilson Pickett recorded in 1969 is great! Wilson Pickett - Hey Joe

Several years ago, the American Idol TV show had a theme episode of "60s British Rock." One of the tunes that contestants had to sing was "You Really Got Me."

A co-worker the next morning and I were talking about the previous night's show, and she said, "I got so upset, they got it ALL wrong!! 'You Really Got Me' is not 60s British, it's a VAN HALEN song, for crying out loud!!!"

All I could do was sadly shake my head and sigh......
