Why would SFM be an unlikely opener for a stadium show? I think it's a perfect opening song.
What you're saying is very true. BUT some artists break all these rules which makes it even more interesing. Bruce Springsteen opening with New York City Serenade played with strings or some obscure Tracks acoustic song is a great example. Yet it works fantastic even in front of a stadium crowd. Sometimes it's nice to be surprised (like Not Fade Away on VL tour).

The opening song has to be one you really feel comfortable playing, no matter which band you're in. The first three or four songs should be ones that you can play in your sleep, imho, just to get into the groove. That's my personal experience from playing in various bands.
Plus, the first song should be one that gets the crowd going.
So anything obscure in front of a stadium crowd is a bad choice.
Sympathy was an interesting choice last year - but JJF or SMU do work better if we're all honest.
I do indeed think that HTW could work well and even better than SFTD, judging by the crowd reaction and singalongs i witnessed last year. In fact it's the only mid-tempo song by the Stones that I can imagine opening a stadium show.

I still think it will be either Symapathy, mixed up occasionally with JJF and Start Me Up
I would be hugely impressed, though, if they tried something else, but I can't see it happening

Yes I agreee SFM would be a fantastic opener, but for a stadium show so think the Stones tend to play it safer with some of the more traditional war horses. But I would love to be proved wrong!

I think maybe it will be too light to open with Sympathy. I think they did it last tour because it was pitch black come 8.30/9pm when the hit they stage. So while I hope for BS or SFM, I would imagine it will be a JJF/SMU rotate through the tour.

Last year opener, SFTD, was surprising because the shows didn't start with a Keith's riff for once. I personally prefer when they start with Keith's guitar; a great Richards' guitar wack is the best way for them to welcome us back. Hopefully this year, the master wacker will be in the mood for it!

Another wild card opener is Gimme Shelter. Can't see them doing it first as it features Sasha, but it could work with a long Keith intro.
Other possibles that I have been thinking of (not my personal choices, just songs that I think that the Stones may consider)
- Paint it black
- get off my cloud
- you got me rocking

HTW wouldn't work well AS an opener These days.
Their setlist dramaturgy is different to the one in the 70's.
Since SW/UJ (exept the shows where they starteted with NFA or MR in Australia) they've been started with big bang to sart on a high energy level.

I think some realism is needed here. The opener will be either Start Me Up, Jumpin' Jack Flash or Brown Sugar. They seemingly enjoy ending shows' with the latter, so I'll opt for Jumpin' Jack Flash as my most likely option.
