Now you're talking! Swap 5 or 6 numbers with lesser-played songs, and the setlist will appear rather fresh, compared to recent setlists, right?

Just listened to Jagger & his band doing this one at Webster Hall in 1993... No, I don't think the Stones could pull it off like this nowadays. Too fast, too many chords, too complex arrangement - the recipe for desaster... And a slowed-down version like 19th Nervous Breakdown some years ago? No thanks. While I share your love for Mother Baby, I fear the days they could do it justice live are gone by now.
Definitely a surprise for Keith, who will then in despair start playing the wring chords for Brown Sugar.

I would be surprised about other opening songs than SMU, JJF or SFTD. 2/3 of all shows since 1989 and most shows since 2005 were started with SMU or JJF. There ARE suitable potential opening songs they never played (or not played since 30 years) like maybe We Love You, One Hit or Highwire. But: we all know this will never happen.

For me SFTD is a great song but pretty poor as a opener. It isn's as exciting as a opener as SMU or JJF. The good opener form me must be something really energetic, loud, wild, pretty fast and with some simple guitar riff. Of course it is only my opinion. Apart from SMU or JJF I see SFM or Paint it Black and of course Satisfaction as a potentially great openers.

Highwire ? I think I would piss myself with excitement if they ever played that again, so best they don't open with it or it would be a long wet night. Star Star would also get me in a state but as you say Never gonna happen. I'm happy with SMU as its a pretty perfect opener SFTD would be nice as its a bit different and I didn't catch the show last year.Quote

As much as I love Rip This Joint, I don't think they could pull it off as an opener. If they are to play it at all, they need to be warmed up and in a groove.
I'd love to see them open with Not Fade Away. Great tempo, MJ on the harp, it'd give me the chills.
But, realistically, at this stage, I think they'll stick with the formulaic show, and not pull any surprises. But if they do, I'll be surprised!
