OT: 15 best albums of 1968
Posted by: dmay ()

I would have to go back and see what else was released that year to decide if these are the 15 best, but I can't really quibble with the choices. I have every one of these on vinyl from back then. Those were the days when my music collection reflected most of what was popular. I listen to today's music occasionally just to hear what's out there, but must confess, my music collection now reflects nothing of today's best selling performers/artists.

Where the hell are the Grateful Dead? "Anthem of the Sun" is a classic from their experimental psychedelic era.

Inevitably.

Got them all. But one of my fave albums of all time, SF Sorrow by The Pretty Things is missing. In my view the most psychedelic album ever made.

Here it is. Fasten your seat belts, we're heading out to where the buses don't go.

Great list. Thrilled that The Zombies made it cause its one of the greatest albums of all time and could get overlooked.

And its still missing:

White Light/White Heat
Child Is The Father Of The Man
We're Only In It For The Money
Music From The Big Pink
Waiting For The Sun
Super Session

And many many others.

Amazing year for great albums (I have all 15 on list), but might have added Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secrets and maybe the Mothers of Invention's We're Only in It for the Money as personal choices.

Pretty great list. My only comments would be 1. Their commentary on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake ends with just saying Small Faces broke up later that year...
...true they lost lead singer Steve Mariott to Humble pie with Frampton...
...but as we know too well here, they'd pick up Ron and Rod and would go into even further greatness...
also 2. I'm just really happy that the Kinks paragraph on "Village Green" had that live sound file of "Picture Book" and "People Take Pictures of Each Other" in Live performance.
Two of my all-time favorite Kinks songs!!!
\but truthfully, there must be a couple of dozen, at least, of my favorite Kinks songs...
lol Ray goes into "If I Was A Rich Man" in the middle of all those fab horns and piano and cymbal crashes...totally nutz in a really good way....
whoa dunno if he's drunk here or what but he's great here for sure...
Pretty amazing stuff I'd never heard before so thanks for the link.
Kinks at their cheekiest in a lot of ways. Great stuff.

OOPs that great Live Kinks stuff they linked is from '72, not '68...
the link was featuring two songs from their 68 record...
good stuff but the super Kinks live tracks they linked are from '72.
Live stuff that I'd never heard and do not think was released in USA...

The Beatles / White Album is very good, but never No 1.
Too many fillers and the last two tracks are unlistenable (for me).

However, those two songs somehow supply a statement and in a positive sense give the White Album a distinct character. The songs are not to be ignored. winking smiley

Only the Beatles could get away with that shit.

Many folk's view, but not mine. For those songs add to the totality of that album in an augmenting way.

From the preceding year I consider "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" from the band that this site covers, in a similar light. And I am one of those few, who not only consider "Gomper" with respect, but outright simply love it.

1968 was an incredible year for great music----but then, of course, EVERY year from 1964 - 1970 was incredible----the best music EVER

In no particular order, I think these albums are missing on the list:

Elvis Presley - Elvis (68 Comeback Special)
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
Dr. John - Gris Gris
Joan Baez - Any Day Now
Scott Walker - Scott 2
Jeff Beck Group - Truth

I thought 1971 was supposed to be the best year ever.

Haven't heard that Scott Walker LP but will listen, ty.
Totally agree with your Elvis and Jeff Beck picks here.
Incredible, and incredibly important, imo, totally wonderful classic albums.
