"Political World" - [www.youtube.com]

Thanks bye bye johnny - listening to Political World now and my expectations for the rest of the album have been somewhat restored. Liking the funkiness provided by the band, and it's different enough from the original that it sets itself apart whereas the title track basically follows the blueprint a bit too closely that Dylan invented imo and it all sounds a bit forced - including the vocals.

Will listen to the rest later....thumbs up

EDIT: Listening to it Ain't Me Babe - mixed emotions as Dylan's versions are so ingrained and perfect that this is hard to digest. Not bad for what it is though, a soulful cover version.

I'd say the band plays well and funky. The vocal performance is really good as well as the overall production. Good piece of work based on a piece of the treasure of the greatest songwriter ever. I like it when sometimes the lyrics are changed (references to Noel Redding and Bruno Mars in Seeing the real you at last). I like Keith's solos in Political world - quite inventive to come from him these days. For the 2nd song with Keith my bet is on It ain't me babe where I'd say Keith does the non tremoloed guitar in the background in the choruses.

I shouldn't have read about Betty Lavette complaining about Dylan complaining about woman because I feel like complaining about Betty's complaints; wellcome to my virtual nightmare.
Rockandroll,

Otis Redding. Bettye knew Otis. Her autobiography is a great read.

Keith sometimes reserves his inventiveness for session work for others. This, "Books of Moses" by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and "Hell Broke Luce" by Tom Waits come to mind.

I think Keith's playing is great on Political World. It's good to hear him playing a bit"funky" again.

Pretty good guitar indeed, it's the 2x "chorded" soloing, right ? A bit of a stretch but as inventive as any "fairy dust" he added to ABB...

From Bettye's interview with John J. Moser of The Morning Call:

What was the … or, how did you reach and how did you use Keith Richards and Trombone Shorty? Were they used remotely? Did they put their parts in remotely? Or did …

“Trombone Shorty did. He was in Europe, and he really got it. But Keith came to the studio.”

No kidding!

“Yeah. And he and I sat there on the couch together and I laid my head on his feet and he played [laughs]. And he blew smoke in my mouth and blew smoke in his, and we decided, were we young together, we would have been in serious trouble.”

[Laughs]

“We were so … I mean, we were just so very much alike. He had some kind of little drink in his cup, 11 o’clock in the morning, and I had a glass of champagne [laughs].”

And I love the fact that … he just seems perfect for that role and that seems like something …

“Oh yes! I was so, so grateful to him. So grateful to him. I told him it was like being a Boy Scout, helping an old lady across the street. [Laughs]”

Well, I am definitely going to check out this album. Sounds interesting. Unfortunately, the "political world" YouTube link doesn't work in Spain for some reason.

I've just bought it as a CD, in conjunction with the Girl From the North Country cast recording.

Lots of good Dylan covers around at the moment.

Speaking of covers: there's a great cover of I Keep Forgettin' by Procol Harum on their Still There'll Be More boxed set.

Political World is a nice slinky number. One of the first reviews described it as Reggae lite but it really isn't.
