The Musical Box (Gabriel era Genesis tribute band - Outstanding show)

I've got front row for their show in Detroit in March. Very much looking forward to it. Also seeing The Isley Brothers and Steve Winwood early in the new year. 2018 is shaping up nicely!

Hopefully The Who come back around to Southern California, but there was something recently about them taking up a residency in Vegas.
Haven't heard anything else on that situation, but I'll be there if it happens.

Fewer shows than normal for me, with just too many repetitive post-peak bands touring our market. Zero desire to see any incarnation of Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull at this point, same with many others. I was not into them when they were at their peak to begin with (ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, Journey, Styx, etc but they still tour a lot).

My favorite, by far, were small and smaller acts.

Chuck Prophet - well-written and passionately performed rock n roll. His latest record 'Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins' is great too

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages - in your face rock n roll from a tight band and Barrence's delivery. There was maybe 25 people at this show, on a Monday night in Buffalo and they played like the place was sold out.

Sunflower Bean - power trio that would have been at home in the 70s musically, but fresh sound with soft-voiced female bassist/singer. They were an opening act who blew me away.

Peter Wolf - always great

Flaming Lips - trippy weirdness in a large club show, and truly a show/spectacle

Todd Rundgren - with is band featuring Kasim Sultan and Prairie Prince, musicianship is top notch. With Todd you never know if you will hear a set of hits or even one hit in a show, or if it will be all deep cuts. The guy clearly doesn't live in the past. Great performance, a set list of deep or new cuts, with a couple Utopia and solo nuggets floating around, with an original stage presentation.

Belle & Sebastian - took my daughter to this show. Their records are soft and mellow and witty. Live they were energetic, electric, self-deprecating and witty. In the normally reserved city of Toronto, in the normally very reserved SONY Centre, the show quickly changed from a reserved-seating arrangement to one large it of 90+% of the crowd dancing on the floor.

Arcade Fire & Broken Social Scene: great double bill and my one of 2 only truly large shows of the year. Great musicianship, fun vibe and interesting staging in a boxing ring in the center of an area.

The Who: yep, more like 'The Two' first time seeing them since Entwistle passed. Roger sounded wayyyyy better than I expected and Pete was in a genuinely greta mood with lots of great stage banter. On top of it, the set list was great, bringing in some old nuggets like Relay, Join Together, Bargain, The Kids Are Alright, etc. Surprisingly good and only $35

Buggest disappointment: Gary Clark Jr. Yes he can play, but just about zero stage presence. Dull enough I left.

Bob Dylan - Paris
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hyde Park London
The Rolling Stones - Paris
Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul - Glasgow
Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters - Glasgow

All were great especially TP

Of the 32 concerts I saw this year, here is my Top 11 list:

11.) Bryan Ferry, Hamburg: An un-expectantly good concert! Fantastic performance with many (obscure) Roxy Music tracks.

10.) Metallica, Köln: A band on my bucket list, but these guys are so GOOD! Not a Heavy Metal fan, but I enjoyed every minute. Really, a great band…

9.) Eddie Vedder, Berlin: Nice and moving concert under sad circumstances… Everyone felt happy and elated after the show!

8.) Bob Dylan, Hannover: Saw him three times this year, the other two concerts were very nice, this one was outstanding.

7.) The Who London (Royal Albert Hall), Performing Tommy: I love The Who! This was a nice Rock history souvenir in the Greatest venue of the world. Should have been higher on the list were it not for the obnoxious drunk old people in the front row…

6.) Elton John, Hamburg: Like Paul McCartney, he always puts on a great show. Amazing canon, fantastic musician, great set-lists. And he gives autographs during his concerts! A true legend, so glad he is still performing on this level.

5.) Ryan Adams, Berlin: Excellent concert, very focused, straight forward, in a great mood. The songs are always superb…

4.) Guns ‘N Roses, Hannover: Surprisingly authentic! Great Set-list, very long show (5 hours including a 1.5 hrs storm break) and Angus Young! Who can ask for more?

3.) Black Sabbath Köln, London: Great Band, great concerts, I am glad I caught them on their Farewell tour

2.)Rolling Stones, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Arnheim: As everyone here knows, the No Filter tour was a great success on so many levels. Performance-wise, the later shows might have been better, but Hamburg had the best set-list, and knowing I will probably never hear “Play With Fire” again, this concert will always be special to me… However, the best 20 or so minutes in live Rock music today must be “Midnight Rambler” and “Street Fighting Man” back to back. Unbelievable! Other highlights: “Dancing with Mr. D.” (really nice!), “She’s so Cold”, “Under My Thumb”, and the “Satisfaction” mayhem at the end of each show. The Greatest Rock ‘N Roll band in the world.

1.)Dinsosaur Jr, Bremen: The best concert of the year! Also one of the three loudest concerts of my life, but what a catharsis!!! Pure melodic noise.

Runner ups: U2, Joshua Tree Tour; Lee Fields; Paul Weller; Herbie Hancock; Queens Of The Stone Age; Jamiroquai; Mark Lanegan; Magpie Salute; Kings Of Leon etc.

It was a very good year! Not one bad concert...

Best shows DakhaBrakha @ Echoplex and Jesus Lizard at Fonda.

Doubt I am going out tonight. Even if someone offered to throw a free VNV Nation ticket my way I might still prefer to avoid the mess downtown.

The Musical Box (Gabriel era Genesis tribute band - Outstanding show)
The Church (Australian rock at its best - If you've never seen them you're missing out)
King Crimson (Three drummers: Deadheads eat yer hearts out!)
Albert Lee (Nothimg more to say)

I had/have tickets for ZZ Top but the show was "postponed" due to Dusty's "tummy ailment"
An update since the year's over.
I'd forgotten that I'd seen Robeert Cray in 2017 - Usual great performance, good to see Richard back again.

Last Friday I saw a band from Maryland called Clutch, who I'd somehow never seen before. Excellent Rock and Roll heavily influenced by Sabbath with hints of AC/DC and to me at least Dr Feelgood. They were on a 4 band bill with Devin Townsend. Good night out for $25
