He played Gomer on the Andy Griffith show for those who don't know.

So sad. In addition to his "Gomer" character (and many others) he was also a fantastic singer (sounded nothing like his Gomer character).

This one hit me hard.

RIP Mr. Nabors. It was my honor and pleasure to work for you (as a stage hand) and catch your show back in 1989.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Oh, damn. He was indeed funny as Gomer (‘Surprise, surprise, surprise!’) and as a singer. RIP.

Loved the camaraderie between him and the drill Sergeant Carter on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., also the laid back station attendant on the Andy Griffith show.

Aww, I loved The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle. He seemed like a sweet man. RIP.

It's unfortunate, but the number of iconic performers from film, TV and music that are going to be passing in the next 10-20 years is going to be absolutely mind-boggling.

A lot of people seem to think he'd already died, maybe because he quit performing and moved to Hawaii years ago.

Punchline to the first dirty joke I ever heard (in the 4th grade):

"Surprise, surprise, surprise...that ain't my finger, either!"

RIP Jim. Gomer Pyle was a fantastically funny show, When it ended, Jim had a short-lived variety show, and one of the regulars was Frank Sutton, who played Sgt. Carter. Loyal guy.

RIP Gomer/Jim.

Married his long time partner in Seattle, when gay marriage first became legal here.. Condolences to his husband, Scott and loved ones.

The "Gomer Pyle USMC" show scared me as a kid. I think it was Sgt. Carter who scared me. Vince Carter was a little too good in that role. Jim was a completely believable Gomer. He also seemed like a good guy in real life.

He used to do his act in the early '60s at a small club near where I grew up in Santa Monica - it was there he was discovered by Andy Griffith.
Can't be sure, but he might have continued performing there through the early '70s as we always knew of that place as the "club Gomer Pyle performed at". Steve Martin also performed there.

From the L.A. Times:

Jim Nabors, TV's lovably naive Gomer Pyle, dies at 87

I'm a Hoosier (meaning your from Indiana). I went home for the 2009 Indy 500, and it was one of the last times Jim sang Back Home Again in Indiana. It actually gave me goosebumps, and I got misty. RIP Jim.

Interesting!

Chuck Norris and Gary Sinise were also named honorary Marines...less than 100 in total in the entire history of the Marines.
