Jack Bruce likely needed a new liver. At 2:22 Keith's opinion on LZ gets mentioned.

Hello,

The double-shovel made an appearance ten years ago tonight, hah-hah!

EC & PK play SSOYL in Manchester, 14/05/13

My ramblings from the day after...

Eric Clapton & Co. at The M.E.N., Tuesday 14th May 2013.

Talk about last-minute decisions: I didn't buy a cut-price (£30 instead of £75, thanks Ebay and thanks to the eejit who bought 6 seats and was getting hosed, hah-hah!) ticket until 6.30pm which meant a real dash to the venue but I still missed most of opener Gary Clark's set.

That was a shame as I had enjoyed what he had done when he guested with The Stones last December. He did watch almost all of E.C.'s set from the side of the stage too! Another time, I hope...

The reason for my almost take-it-or-leave-it attitude was that I had seen E.C. in the same venue 4 years ago and while I enjoyed the show, it was 'inessential' to repeat the experience. Plus I had read about the show in Brum the previous night and some fan reports said that Eric had disengaged towards the end of the two hours: I certainly didn't want to pay (even a reduced amount, hah-hah!) to see someone 'phone it in', so to speak.

The arena had it's upper tier tarped-off halfway around so I guess about 10000 punters were still anticipating a show that may well be the last time we see Eric, given his announcement to quit full-scale touring. Anyway at 8.40pm the house lights went out and away we went...it was a fairly raucous reception and our man seemed to be relaxed and beaming away: so far so good.

To cut a long story he played great- I'll let the two videos that I shot tell the story. I was thrilled to see Chris 'Quadrophenia' Stainton up there, as well as Steve Jordan, who watched Eric like a hawk throughout- there was no way that he was going to miss any cues!

So the bottomline: would I recommend this tour? Yeah-even without a revved-up 'Layla' the guy can still delight!

01. Hello Old Friend
02. My Fathers Eyes
03. Tell The Truth
04. Black Cat Bone
05. Gotta Get Over
06. Come Rain Or Come Shine (EC & Paul Carrack - vocals)
07. Got To Get Better In A Little While
08. Badge
09. Driftin' Blues
10. Goodnight Irene
11. It Ain't Easy (Paul Carrack - vocals)
12. Layla
13. Tears In Heaven
14. Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out
15. Lay Down Sally
16. Blues Power
17. Love In Vain
18. Crossroads
19. Little Queen Of Spades
20. Cocaine
21. Sunshine Of Your Love (with Peter Kay)
22. High Time We Went (EC & Paul Carrack - vocals)

Cheers,

Simon.

I was there. Didn’t recall it was ten years ago before I read your post. Time flies.

That was a long, great show that lasted 2 hours and 10 minutes, a stellar performance where a 68-year old Slowhand delivered a high-octane supercharged explosive guitar play from beginning to end. I had seen his show in Birmingham the previous night, leaving the venue somewhat disappointed as he dropped two songs, Gotta Get Over and Sunshine Of Your Love, most likely due to an apathetic and unresponsive Midlands crowd. Manchester was a completely different experience.

Later in the month I caught two more shows at the Royal Albert Hall, night five and six out of seven. They were both brilliant, the second night in particular, but the unparalleled energy Eric and the band radiated from the stage in Manchester was second to none.

I have seen the man live since 1974 (the most recent ones being at the Budokan on the 21st and 22nd last month). IMHO the 2013 tour was the best he embarked on in the 21st century.

A happening ten years time ago…

From Eric Clapton's website: Eric and Jeff - Moon River

“Moon River,” recorded not long before Jeff’s tragic passing, is now available on all streaming platforms.
This release comes ahead of a series of Jeff Beck tribute shows at Royal Albert Hall in London.
The double A-side “Moon River” and new song “How Could We Know” featuring Judith Hill,
Simon Climie, and Daniel Santiago will be released on 7" vinyl July 14, 2023.

Saw Across 24 Nights at the local cinema last night.
Brilliant film — awe-inspiring performances, eye-catching visuals, impeccable sound, an absolute must-see for any Slowhand fans — even if you are turned away from the man due to his anti-lockdown/vaccine skeptic nonsense.

Not only Clapton but also every other performer captured here is very focused on their role. This documentary has reminded me of how extraordinary a guitarist and musician he is…or was, to say the least.

There will be encore screenings from May 21st. Don’t miss it!

Indeed. I have sometimes toyed with an idea of starting a new thread, “why are concert tickets released so long before show dates nowadays?” or something to that effect. When I was young, they were on sale a couple of months prior to the gigs, which was a handy enough waiting time to keep my expectation and motivation high.

How can a concertgoer foresee what situation his or her life will turn to a year ahead?

It leaves time to organise his life and not to plan a journey on the other side of the earth at the same time or so.

Here, I’m not only talking about Clapton but also general tendency observed as regards the timing of an announcement of a tour, bigger name artists in particular.

The Stones’ tour was announced about 3-4 months before it started, which is good (so far).

Neil Young just announced a tour yesterday which starts in three weeks...a bit short notice to say the least, but better than waiting an entire year.

I was excited to hear in that same interview that he is going to play some songs by The Band on this tour as a tribute to Robbie. That sounds terrific. I dont really follow RFK except to hear that his family came out against some of the things he was saying. My initial thought is that I don't agree with EC on this but I respect his position and will agree to disagree on this. I will focus on hearing Clapton switch up his set list and play some great Band tunes.

Oh, Christ! Who cares about Eric’s politics? I just want to hear him play. He’s one of the greatest. Nothing else should matter; whether you agree of disagree with his stances. Music is what matters; at leat for me.

I prefer the 6 week lead time of days of yore to the year plus now.
