Longest Stones Concert
Posted by: redrum ()
Date: September 17, 2005 19:20

The longest known Rolling Stones concert was on 21 Aug 1976, Knebworth, Hertforshire, England. The Stones played 29 songs--including a bit of "Country Honk". We'll never see such a long setlist again. I think in 81/82 set has been they typically did 26 song setlists. Steel Wheels was around 25-26, but its been getting shorter & shorter since....

Are the boys getting lazy & old? Shorter sets, and not so much experimenting with setlist.

Of course, it is probable, though not confirmed, that the Stones would have done longer sets from 1962-1964 era. Sadly, I don't know of a complete show that circulates from that era (save a couple gigs from '64, like Pollwinners Show).

redrum, Knebworth was the exception. On 1976 tour the Stones were playing 20 songs every night. The Stones started playing more than 20 songs in 1975.

1969: 13-14
1971: 10-12
1972: 17-18
1973 Australasian Tour: 16
1973 European Tour: 14-16
1975: 21-24
1976: 19-20
1978: 16-19
1981/82: 24-26
1989/90: 23- 28 (28 in the first concert of the tour, Stadium Veterans)
1994-95: 22-27
1997-99: 20-23
2002-03: 19-22

So, during the seventies the Stones were extremly "getting lazy & old"...

They did far shorter sets in '63 because they usually did more than one per night; the UK '63 tour was a package tour (Bo, Everlys, etc), so that was certainly quite short. Post success they did 30 minute shows through '66, & '69 & '72 were 14 - 16 songs, 75 - 90 minutes (I have a clipping from the '72 Boston Garden show - 78 minutes). The '78 shows were shorter as well average 17 songs - When did they experiment (I mean vary within a tour) w/ setlists in the 60s or 70s or 80s?? That's a recent phenomenon, basically dating to '95.

Macca's shows have around 36 songs. A glance at his recent setlist makes me wish the Stones would perform that many songs in their shows, even if they added an intermission.

Around the beginning of the 80's they had a strong competition from Bruce Springsteen who held concerts up to 4,5 hours. Now Bruce has cut down by 50%, Stones by around 30%.

Knebworth had more songs than any Stones gig, but length-wise, Philadelphia 31.8.89 was the longest concert they ever played. I think its about 160 minutes (excluding the break when the sound system went dead). Knebworth was 145 minutes or so

Springsteen has NEVER played a concert lasting 4 and a half hours. Thats a myth. The longest gig he ever played was Nassau Coliseum, 31.12.80 which clocked in at about 5 minutes short of four hours (with an interval). I think it featured about 38 songs. Normally, shows on the River tour were around 3 - 3 and a half hours

And Springsteen has not cut down by 50%. His solo shows at the minute are just under 2 and a half hours but on the last E-Street band tour (2002-2003) the shows were usually between 160 and 200 minutes (the final night of the tour was 3 and a half hours). His shows up to 1993 had an interval, but that hasnt been the case since. When playing with a band, the shows have generally stayed the same length for about 25 years

Stones concerts in the early 80's were usually around 130-135 minutes. Now they're usually two hours, give or take a couple of minutes.

1997-99: 20-23
The final show of the BtB 98 tour in Istanbul had only 19 songs!

its not the number of songs, but the quality of the show that matters

in that respect, the stones still beat the shit out of everyone else out there

They are still doing 19 and I really wouldn't have believed if 20 years ago somebody would have told me that they would be doing so many when they are nearly 80 years old.

Also keep in mind that Macca doesnt move or run as much as Mick does.

And he does not play a 12 minute Midnight Rambler. Many of his songs are 3 to 4 minutes.

We got 27 songs the first show in Boulder, Co in ‘81.
Only 25 the next day. They dropped Tops and Star Star.
Was that the only ‘81 show that they played 27 songs?

They’re performing fewer songs per-show, but the show duration isn’t significantly shorter. The tempos are generally slower today, and there’s more prep-time between individual performances. If you listen to, say, a Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle show,?you’ll hear how quick off the draw they are. There’s far less space between performances. Very snappy.

Some more recent shows have been over 2 1/2 hours :

02 London 25thNov. 2012 153 mins

Barclays centre 15th Dec 2012 155 mins

and a few 2013 shows were clocking in at 145 mins

Generally less numbers played, but more drawn out arrangements

Do you want to hear Midnight Rambler or Rocky Raccoon six times in a row?

I think one of the tops of longest shows is 2hrs 42 minutes.
The opening of the Voodoo Lounge tour at RFK in Washington DC -- 27 songs, and they played many first time performed songs then 1994-- that are more common place now-- Ill never forget the 15' tall stilt men walking out during Monkey Man-- the first time that song ever played live.

"Not Fade Away"
"Tumbling Dice"
"You Got Me Rocking"
"Rocks Off"
"Sparks Will Fly"
"Live With Me"
"Satisfaction"
"Beast of Burden"
"Angie"
"Dead Flowers"
"Sweet Virginia"
"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo"
"It's All Over Now"
"Stop Breaking Down"
"Who Do You Love"
"I Go Wild"
"Miss You"
"Honky Tonk Women"
"Before They Make Me Run"
"The Worst"
"Sympathy for the Devil"
"Monkey Man"
"Street Fighting Man"
"Start Me Up"
"It's Only Rock'n Roll (But I Like It)"
"Brown Sugar"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash"

That's not the Setlist of Washington. It is the PPV from Miami now released as Voodoo Lounge Uncut.

I never thought about the fact that they only did 20 songs in 1976 (except Frankfurt, Knebworth, London and Leicester) as opposed to the longer shows in 1975.Interesting.
