There were a lot of rumors he was sick. Is that what they are referring to?

More likely a social/political reference, not a personal one.

That's what I thought, too.

Right. I couldn't tell if thats what it meant or personal. I assumed not personal, but also hadn't seen him explicitly condemn Trump so wasn't sure if that was a stretch.

The new tune "Already Great" is a not-so-subtle bash at Trumps "Make America Great Again" slogan.

Already Great

I'm Canadian by the way
And I love the USA
(My American friend)
I love this way of life
The freedom to act and the freedom to say

Already great
You're already great
You're the promised land
You're the helping hand

Woke up this morning
Thinking about you and your new deal
(My American friend)
Trying to put myself in your shoes
Trying to feel how you feel

Already great
You're already great
You're the promised land
You're the helping hand

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

No wall
No ban...

Not my words
That's just you the other day out on that street
(My American friend)
You're looking at one of the lucky ones
Came here from there to be free

Got to chase the life with Freedom land
Got to play my part in God's plan
(My American friend)

Already great
You're already great
You're the promised land
You're the helping hand

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

No wall
No ban
No fascist USA

Whose streets?
Our streets
[repeat till end]

Not familiar with the rest of the new album, but if his album Living With War is anything to go by, something tells me there will be some more of the above on the new one.

On the other hand...there once was a different view down south...

Sweet Home Alabama

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the south-land
I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again and I think it's a sin

Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

Yet they were friends - Ronnie Van Zandt even sporting a Neil Young t-shirt at many shows, and Neil writing Powderfinger for Skynyrd (unfortunately they never had the chance to record it).

Here's an interesting and lengthy blog which talks about the relationship between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd:

Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd

Some excerpts:

"We wrote Alabama as a joke. We didn't even think about it - the words just came out that way. We just laughed like hell, and said 'Ain't that funny'... We love Neil Young, we love his music..." - Ronnie Van Zandt
___________________________________________________________

"While the rebuttal (Sweet Home Alabama) was heartfelt, Skynyrd held Neil Young in high regard for his musical achievementts and they weren't intending to start a feud of any kind. "Neil is amazing, wonderful... a superstar," said Van Zant. "I showed the verse to Ed King and asked him what Neil might think. Ed said he'd dig it; he'd be laughing at it." Ed King says that the tune was not so much a direct attack on Young but just a good regional song. The song was well received but immediately put a stigma on the band as rednecks. Producer Al Kooper added. "Hey, you have to be more careful when you write a song now. But I'll tell you something -- Neil Young loved it. That's true, he told me so to my face." "
___________________________________________________________________

As for the rumor that Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded the Neil Young song "Powderfinger" (see for lyrics analysis), here's an interview in MOJO Magazine , where Young said:

"Lynyrd Skynyrd almost ended up recording Powderfinger before my version came out. We sent them an early demo of it because they wanted to do one of my songs.

Interviewer Q. Surprising, that. After all, Lynyrd Skynyrd put you down by name on Sweet Home Alabama, their first hit single....

Young: Oh, they didn't really put me down! But then again, maybe they did! (laughs) But not in a way that matters. Shit, I think Sweet Home Alabama is a great song. I've actually performed it live a couple of times myself. "

In addition to the song "Powderfinger", Young allegedly also gave the band the song “Sedan Delivery” and "Captain Kennedy" to record.

I love him but last time I saw him in an "Intimate" concert. Meaning just him and a guitar, he did more preaching about what foods to buy, and the environment than he did performing. VERY BORING! And when people in the audience started yelling back to play some F***in music, it really ruined his vibe. We left less than half way through. That being said, I have seen him since the a few times with a band and He rocked out.

That just happens with certain artists. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed... you go along with the ride and its not always pretty, but its usually more good than bad. My dad saw Lou Reed many times. Last time was at Carnegie Hall. The show was terrible based off his memory. Really short (like 70 minutes), a lot of Raven material, nothing really classic, nothing even really "new rock", and just very subdued and boring. What annoyed him even more was it was coming right off the heels of the truly EXCELLENT Animal Serenade tour which was a phenomenal retrospective and saw Lou in great spirits. So it was just a surprise, and the crowd got rowdy, Lou got kinda annoyed, the show never really took off.

He did many other great shows after that but sometimes with these guys you catch them at an off time. And in retrospect they may be good shows. I've actually found a bootleg of that Lou show my dad saw and its not bad at all, but that comes with hindsight and a bit more knowing what to expect. Its the chance you take with these guys and unless they burn you multiple times in a row, I generally say its worth sticking with them cause Neil could do something terrible then come right back with something phenomenal and there's very few artists like that.

Indeed their is a small town in north Ontario and apparently it is Omemee. My understanding is Neil lived there as a child from age 4-11 and this town may be the inspiration for Helpless. Can hardly wait for his return home tonight and hope the show is great!

Thanks Cristiano - looking forward to this!

"The 90-minute show will be open to 200 invited guests"

Would be amazing to be in that room, but thankfully we get to see it virtually LIVE!

This is actually exciting AF! So glad he’s bringing it home. A few years ago, he and his brother Bob did a documentary that included a drive in vintage cars around Omeemee and to Toronto, the kind of trip down memory lane we’ll likely never see from The Stones (Exhibitionism excepted). But I smile when I hear Omeemee described in Helpless as the town in ‘north’ Ontario. That’s definitely artistic license - it’s 25 miles from the lake, effectively the border. Gotta go many hundred miles up to be considered North. Lovely area, beautiful song. Tonight should be one for the books.

Neil is auctioning off many of his personal items, too, including his train collection and musical equipment. It may be a tumultuous year for him.
