Can't You Hear Me Knocking: Kick-ass Perfection
Posted by: DaveG ()

I was listening to the studio Sticky Fingers today and just had to comment on what I considered absolute musical perfection on a portion of this song. How many times have I listened to this since '71?? But from 1:52 to 2:42, the "Hear me singing" section. The perfect blend of vocals and harmonies, lyrics, instrumentation, with the organ in the mix, and the song's structure. It is like a perfect storm of all components to create an absolute kick-ass bit of rock and roll. So sublime, they were at their peak as a band. After all these years I am still getting goose bumps hearing this masterpiece.

thumbs up

That opening riff is like a buzz saw that sets the stage, and the instrumental part that comes later is like the aftermath of a monstrous category 5 hurricane.
The entire studio version is perfection and is superior to all live versions imo, but when Mick Taylor played on it live during the 50 and Counting tour it was also something very special.

You're right but without the violence of the intro, it wouldn't be the same atmosphere.
This song is perfect from first second to the end because there is also a real end. A must!

What always surprised me was that apparantly the second part was "just" a jam and they just kept the tape rolling. Indeed, it's perfection.

As a Brit, the term "kick-ass" means nothing. Can anyone explain what it means?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

CYHMK is my favorite Rolling Stones song. And considering the incredible competition, that says it all.

That opening riff has become iconic...it's been used in several movies to great effect:

- Casino
- Blow
- The Fighter
- Pain and Gain
- Spider Man: Homecoming (a very unexpected but pleasant surprise)

That riff just has this feeling of, "We're getting into real some nasty shit right now, but we're gonna have SO much fun while doing it."

Also, the background "Yeah" (sounds like MJ) adds to the anticipation.

I heard Monkey Man on the radio earlier today in my car , and all I could do was crank it up to 11.
Another killer (or kick-ass) tune, and no Mick Taylor necessary for this one...it's 100% BEEF! (just made that description up, but it sounds good). winking smiley
The amount of so many iconic monsters they released during this period is mind boggling..

For a few years now, every time I hear the opening riff to CYHMK, I always get a picture of Nicky Santoro going “Peak a boo you motherf*ckers you“.

Yeah. To me it’s in the same league as Goodfellas.

Agree. The top notch.
In the same league, and I hardly see another one, is the break of Monkey Man - 1'49 to 3'12
Starting with some jungle wilderness riff (a sort of primate ancestor of CYHMK intro) to evolve in the nostalgic, bitter-sweet, well-mannered second part of the instrumental at 2'35 which makes us feel how doom we are.
A concentrate of human evolution, if you ask me. It haunted me during years and years, I would just play the LP for this portion, just to remind me where we come from and where we are going to...
