That opening riff has become iconic...it's been used in several movies to great effect:

- Casino
- Blow
- The Fighter
- Pain and Gain
- Spider Man: Homecoming (a very unexpected but pleasant surprise)

That riff just has this feeling of, "We're getting into real some nasty shit right now, but we're gonna have SO much fun while doing it."

smileys with beer

Also, the background "Yeah" (sounds like MJ) adds to the anticipation.
CASINO is a Stones movie.

As a Dutchman, I think most people around the world understand the meaning.

As a Brit, I know exactly what it means.

As a Texan I don’t get it...isn’t it “whoop ass”?

Best live version with Taylor to me. They really capture the spirit here. Thanks for the upload Kleermaker.

Nice thanks. The Roots are a great band, but that singer is no Mick Jagger.
And while they may have captured the spirit, it seems to be missing the essence (Keith, Charlie, Mick, Bobby Keys,), and MT seemed a be a bit gun shy and hesitant.
There were far better versions with the Stones during the 50 and Counting tour imo - all of them in fact.

Yeah, the essence, the ingredients, the original members are there, but that's something different than the spirit to me. If I listen to the Stones (Glastonbury) during the 50 and Counting tour version, they are way too slow and sloppy, Jagger cannot reach the original pitch anymore, Watts searching for the right groove. Keith is having trouble with his fingers already, he doen't nail it to me. I hear an old band in turmoil. I myself prefer a tight band that is younger and fully capable. The guitarist/singer of the Roots comes closer to the original (even in standard tuning) and nails the vocal line (pitch) of the original in a very soulful manner, much better than barking like Jagger, because Mick cannot sing the original vocal line anymore. Taylor's tone on the Jimmy Fallon show is Fender amp warm winking smiley he has the right sustain, and after a few "bum notes" -give him a break after so many years- he plays a great and convincing, albeit a bit short solo, but: "in der beschränkung zeigt sich erst der meister". Minor point is the horn section: A tuba cannot replace Bobby Keys'saxophone, but the Roots percussion player gives full compensation for that. My two @#$%& cents... smiling smiley

That was great, but the percussion was WAY too loud. MT's solo is completely overwhelmed...late night shows are notorious for bad sound mic'ing though.

Mick Jagger has stated that he did various vocal harmony overlays on CYHMK as the key was to high for him and he had to hide the fact that he was not hitting the notes well.
Keith Richards and Mick Taylor have both said they didn’t plan the long instrumental jam; they had simply kept playing without realizing the tape was still rolling. After hearing the playback, they realized they’d recorded the jam. A happy accident for rock ‘n’ roll fans!
The Stones played a truncated version of this song a few times before it was released on the Sticky Fingers album. These performances took place on their 11-date UK farewell tour before they left England to avoid taxes. After these shows, they didn't play it live again until 2002, at which point they could bring alone plenty of musicians to support it. They had percussionists on earlier tours, but didn't feel comfortable performing this song since anytime they rehearsed it, they either made stale attempts to duplicate the album version or did sloppy improvisations.
The studio version has never been replicated live even with Mick Taylor playing lead plus MJ's vocal limitations for this song would not have helped.
Anyway who cares as this is one awesome fantastic song by the Rolling Stones which they created during their peak 1968 - 1972 period.
I recently listed to the song 5 times in a row on the remastered album and this song still blows my mind as much as when first hearing it in 1971.

The song is over seven minutes long, and begins with a Keith Richards open-G tuned guitar intro. At two minutes and forty-three seconds, an instrumental break begins, with Rocky Dijon on congas; tenor saxophonist Bobby Keys performs an extended saxophone solo over the guitar work of Richards and Mick Taylor, punctuated by the organ work of Billy Preston. At 4:40 Taylor takes over from Keys and carries the song to its finish with a lengthy guitar solo.
This song is absolutely frigging awesome and is one of the Stones best ever recorded songs.

The Stones at the top of the summit . Pure Genius and perfection from the Glimmer Twins with the out of this world greatness from Mick Taylor's solo on his Viceroy Brown Gibson ES-345 (from Mick Taylor himself in a Guitar Player interview in 1979? when he came out with his first solo album I believe titled Stone Alone ? ) Also , I have to mention the late great master of the horn Bobby Keys who went off on his Saxophone before Mick Taylor . Just pure perfection from The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world THE ROLLING STONES (cue the horns to play Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for a Common Man )

This may sound odd but, for those of us who were around and aware when this song was first released (I was 17), many rock fans reacted with - "Oh they're just trying to ride the wave of the Santana sound". Abraxas was hugely popular earlier in 1970 and most did not consider the fact that CYHMK was recorded well before Santana burst onto the scene.

Sticky Fingers was part of the soundtrack of my life Summer of 1971. Something to finally kick Ya-Yas off my turntable.

Very true, and I had purchased the first Santana LP in March of 1970 when Evil Ways was a minor radio hit. Still, IMO they did not really gain widespread mainstream awareness until the Woodstock movie came out in Summer 1970 and Abraxas came out that Fall. So folks said the Stones copped that sound. Is that what you are saying, that maybe the Stones did have Santana in mind during Spring of 1970?

Well, most of CYHMK had nothing to do with Santana musically. However, I've read a few Taylor-interviews where he made it perfectly clear that he knew his style well.

We can only guess, though...

I thought Mick's comments on Sticky Fingers DVD release from Fonda Theatre on
CYHMK tried to overshadow Mick Taylor contributions when he said the stones normally don,t go into the whole jazz latin groove and where really brave to go their. Well sorry Mick if it was not for MT and Bobby Keyes then the song would of just been the first part as Keith only mentions in his interview.
