Tom Petty confirmed dead at 66 after suffering cardiac arrest



Reports have confirmed that Tom Petty has passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 66.

TMZ were the first outlet to report that Petty was rushed to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital on Sunday night (October 1) after being found unconscious at his home in Malibu, California. According to the report, the musician was “not breathing and in full cardiac arrest”.

Petty was put on life support and his condition was thought to be “critical”. The website later reported that “after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support”.

The Los Angeles Police Department have since confirmed the news to CBS News. We are awaiting for Petty’s representatives to release a statement regarding the news.

This is terrible, terrible news, and on a day we just don't need any more. Here is hoping he can make a full recovery, but this sounds really bad.

This has been an awful day

Tom Petty was reportedly found unconscious in full cardiac arrest last night.
According to TMZ, the 66-year-old Petty was rushed to the hospital after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.
UPDATE: TMZ is now reporting that “after Petty got to the hospital, he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.”

TMZ reports that EMTs found Petty with a pulse and then took him to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. Reportedly, Petty was then put on life support. His condition is unknown, but was listed as critical from the time he was discovered.

There has been no official word from Petty’s camp on this news, but according to TMZ, sources close to Petty were “clearly upset.”

Petty’s most recent tour, which he hinted could be his last big one, wrapped up just last week in California with three concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. The tour launched back in April and was being touted as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 40th-anniversary tour.

While band leader Petty suggested that the run could end up being the band’s last major tour of that size, guitarist Mke Campbell was dubious. “Tom is really happy,” he said before the tour started. “The band is playing great. I think we’re sounding better than we’ve ever sounded, and we’re inspired. It’s very exciting for us. And the band is really rising to the occasion and everybody is in a great place right now. I think we can keep going for a while.”

Very sad news, RIP.

I remember reading an article this summer (RS ?) on a show in Boulder I think and I seem to remember something was "off" (could have just been a rain interruption) will try to dig that up.

Unfortunately for we lovers of classic rock, sad events (like this appears to be) are going to be a regular occurrence over the next 10-15 years. Whoever you love, be it the Stones, the Who, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac or whoever else is still performing live, go and see them whenever you can and enjoy them while we still have them. Nothing's forever.
