Jeez, I think he's been wearing them for Sympathy since 2005 from what I can remember.

It's not every night for some reason, but I'm pretty sure he started wearing them periodically on the Bigger Bang tour.

At least 12 years or so he's been using them. Only during SFTD

He's gotta be playing to a click track for that song, or he needs to hear the sampled percussion. That's the only reason I can see.

Most bands use in-ear monitors...Charlie is old-school.

how's Charlie doing this tour so far you think? Hard to tell from cell phones or YouTube clip sometimes. Sometimes they're great but you know sometimes not.

I think he's wearing them to eliminate the sampled percussion so he doesn't get thrown off. That stuff must be bouncing around and kicking back like crazy, and it already has some echo on it. I'm guessing he really doesn't have a good sense of which one to follow sitting in the middle of that aural mess.

He is wearing them to hear the sampled percussion pattern better. It works like a click-track for him. He could easily butcher the song completely if he'd play off-time, too fast or too slow next to the sample. To make sure that it doesn't happen and he can hear the sample correctly he is hearing it through the headphones. I think he is doing that since the ABB tour.

I thought he'd been using headphones ever since they started doing SFTD with a loop back on the Steel Wheels Tour. Yes, I could be wrong. smiling smiley

Charlie first started to use headphones on the b-stage during BTB Tour.
Then on Sympathy for the Devil from 2005 (With a few odd exceptions).
A "fun" moment came in Ottowa 2005 when the headphones were not working; Charlie left the drumstool in the middle of Sympathy and complained to the crew! This was only the 3rd or 4th time he used headphones on Sympathy btw.

That's what I also thought.....

Should be fairly easy to check... look at the Atlantic City PPV DVD, or even At The Max?

So, Wild Horses couldn't drag him away.

I don't think you even see a shot of Charlie playing drums on Live at the Max.

But he's definitely not wearing headphones on the Miami '94 PPV.

Keith Moon used to wear them during Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again to keep pace with the synthesizers/keyboards.
Alex Van Halen also used to wear them during the Van Hagar years when they played Right Now.

He also used them on Bell Boy, don't know why but perhaps it had something to do With him singing partly lead vocals on that one. He struggled quite a lot With them during Bell Boy at the infmaous gig at The Valley (Charlton's ground in East London) - the loudest gig ever (132 DB measured 32 meters away from the speakers):

Yes, I'd forgotten about the B2B B-stage. However, I don't recall him wearing them on the main stage for Sympathy prior to 2005.

Cholie wears EX-29 "Extreme Isolation" headphones so he doesn't have to endure Keef's lead and solo guitar "playing" during Sympathy...

He put it on his personal rider.

[Edit : it's a joke]

This could help explain the Brown Sugar in Spielberg debacle as well as many of the other mistakes that are currently taking place, but it could also be the reason some of the songs are played well!
