OT: How Good Was Steve Winwood?

Came across this article. Traffic was one of my fave bands back in the day. I still like a number of their songs. Their second album is still a great listen, along with the John Barleycorn lp, IMHO. Never really got into Winwood as a solo.

I Love him/his stuff and what he brings to the music world. I believe he has a cool musical history. I've seen him twice, pretty recently in the last few years, opening for Tom Petty/Heartbreakers and a solo tour right after that. A wild story, back in 1995, I was walking in a mall in Nashville with my girlfriend, it was dead on a wednesday afternoon, spotted him walking with a Gap bag, so I went up to him, shook his hand a got to talk to him for a few minutes ! A True English Gentleman. I will always remember how excited I was to meet such a musical legend just walking a round out and about...

...couple of weeks ago I saw him in Munich at the Tollwood Festival (nice little fair). He was great. Phantastic band too, he jazzed up his a bit glossy 80`s hits in a great way, and during the last numbers even played some mean rock n roll guitar. He seemed to be far from gone, was in fine voice, obviously takes care of his health and could do a lot more, if he`d find a reason to go out. Very sympathetic and friendly character as well; for the debauched and arrogant rock star you`d have to look someplace else

Not sure why the question is "How good WAS . . . ," he's still very active and in great form. He's lost remarkably little of his vocal range. Great performer!

Saw him for the first time a couple years ago when he opened on the Petty tour. I was watching the crew get things ready before the show. At the side of the stage a few guys were standing around talking, and I thought, man, one of those guys sure looks like Steve. Sure enough, about 15 minutes later he strolled on stage and just started playing. No introduction or fanfare. His voice is still spot on, and hearing him took my mind back to another time and place. I liked seeing Petty, but really liked seeing Winwood. He got a nice ovation from the crowd.

Seeing him again in about 3 weeks at a small arena near me and I can't wait. See him if you get the chance.

Loved him with Clapton at MSG in 2008, and opening for Tom Petty a few years later. Hope he swings through town again.

He divides his time between The Cotswolds, UK, where he has a studio, and a home in Nashville.
Yes, still a great voice and an enduring talent.
Pretty low key private life which is why many people think he's somewhat reclusive
and /or semi retired. Far from it, he tours regularly though producing new original material (like most of his contempories) is getting tough, it seems.

I think this month he has a live retrospective set of recordings over the last decade or so coming out.
Maybe his first solo live album?

My wife and I are seeing him again live in less than three hours here in Santa Ynes, CA in a very small theater at Chumash Casino- always a great show and his band are all amazing musicians.
His lead guitar player José Neto can play as gentle as a whisper, or as wild and frenetic as a hive full of wasps! smoking smiley I've seen him so many times I've lost count - solo, with Traffic, and with Clapton, but possibly the best was solo at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in 2004, though they've all been great.

He was on Jonesy's jukebox radio show the other day for a nice interview, which is now available on youtube.

Solo theater show in 2003 was one of the best small-venue concerts I've ever been to. Arena gig with Clapton in 2009 remains one of the five best concerts I've been to in any size venue.

Yes released today, and yes his first live solo album made up of live recordings from the last decade.
Heard a a bit of it the other day on radio during the above interview on Jonesy's Juke box, and sounded really good.
Jonesys show runs two hours and is filled with music along with a guest interview, so I'm assuming the tunes have been cut out of the youtube video I posted above.

He was, and remains, extremely good: one of the best Brit soul singers ever, a tasteful keyboardist, not too shabby on the guitar, and an ace songwriter. An all-around top talent, slick 80s records notwithstanding.

He was amazing; He was a wunderkind. He was legendary on arrival. 16 year old kid tearing the ass out of Gimme Some Lovin' plus besides incredible, almost otherworldly in dimension natural soul groove vocals; he totally understood the Hammond and what he wanted to get out of it. He was like almost a Stevie Wonder level genius in his way; at least that was the feeling I remember about him in the general rock/blues culture at the time. Add Dave Mason Ginger Baker Eric and others along the way and one of the peak seminal 'superstar' bands of all time, Traffic and Blind Faith and even the estimable stuff with Specer Davis. I'm in the country where soul and blues was born; and proud to say Steve is real soul groove mastahh of very, very high order...imo...

i did not follow his solo efforts into the last decadeds; but would see him now and again and always think 'beauty and class' regardless the period.

How Good was he on arrival? Extradorinarily good.
And think it's generally fair to say a very lot of people were instant deep fans and stayed with him.

I saw him doing a free show back in 2003. It was a warm-up for a fireworks show that radio station KFOG used to put on every year. He sounded just like he did when he was a kid. I don't remember if he lowered the keys to any of the songs. He played a Hammond B3 and a little bit of guitar. If he can still sing and play as well as he did then, he'd be worth seeing. And it sounds like he is.

Love the new live album.........now, if he'd just reissue On The Road with some extra tracks. I love Traffic, augmented by some of the Muscle Shoals swampers.

I'm with Aquamarine...what is this 'past tense' we're using. Arc of a Diver, while 80s, was great.
