Oh my what a talent, and from such a young age he was just killing it. Yes, a white kid that had incredible soul and groove oozing from his heart. I saw Traffic many times. Winwood was a fantastic keyboard and very underrated guitar player. Never mind some fine lyrics over the years too. Solo career has sadly flown under the radar lately, but he still sings his ass off and remains a solid player. Saw Stevie and his band open for Petty a few years ago in Chicago and Winwood really got the crowd going, or at least those of us that were there that knew and respected his massive catalogue. If Winwood is playing in your area do yourself a favor and go check it out.

In my opinion, the idea that Winwood opens for Tom Petty is ludicrous.

Oh, I get that Petty is the bigger draw nowadays. But if you compare the two, in terms of quality, influence and importance in the history and development of rock, Winwood is one of the giants, whereas Petty is a really good follower that has benefited from radio's stagnation with a really long career.

Yes loog droog I get where you are coming from completely, but time has moved on and so has the revolving door of musical taste and the talent has changed with it. For older fans such as myself I take pleasure in having seen guys like Winwood play in their prime in smaller venues with like minded fans. On the other hand the Petty band is solid and always a pleasure to see in concert too. We can't bring back the past, but we can still get a glimmer when we play the recorded music and appreciate it for what it is to our ears.

No need to suffer through Petty on the current tour - it's all Winwwod in small theaters, casino's, and wineries - although he'll be headlining the Hollywood Bowl next week with class act Mavis Staples opening.
The one and only time I passed seeing him was him opening for Petty - it seemed sacrilege. No offense to Petty fans, but he's nowehere near the same league as Steve Winwood imo.

The new live cd is great from what I've heard so far, and slowly making my way through savoring it all. Two cd's worth and about a third of the way through - it sounds as good as if you were actually seeing him live. The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys has the most amazing guitar solo from José Neto - it's like a holy grail. Not only can he perfectly play all of the subtle rhythms of various songs live, some with a jazzy funky vibe, he can also play lead guitar at the same stunning level as Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix imo.

Very cool; never seen Derek live, and what a treat that Steve showed up to do Blind Faith songs with Eric. That's some in-person history for you right there...
...never been to one of those but have seen Eric with The Stones and also solo in the 80's early 90's a few times. Never yet seen Steve Winwood live tho.

Petey Nooney still a'tourin' looking like just a bit the sort of a little fatter face 15 year old without the sawtooth; looks great. as for the actual voice and stuff; well honestly i haven't listened. Once you've given your heart to Freddie & The Dreamers there is a certain responsiblity inherent in it; I mean, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas were gonna be very very hard to remove from the Number One slot; and Freddie did have his shortcomings, but in the end, you can say that I'm a Dreamer; I might be the only one. Not to say that you should join us...you know?

He ruled at the 2007 Crossroads festival. I hadn't seen him live since Traffic, and was looking forward to seeing what he had. He absolutely brought down the house with his singing and presence, and he brought Clapton up 3 levels.

But what most stuck with me was how well he played guitar. On a (very long) day of the greatest players, he stood out.

I saw him once after that opening for Petty. Very good, but not at the same level.
