Id just like to hear the radio ad for that contest... WOW!!
I can only imagine what that sounded like...

It was your destiny BD! WINNER!!

and that was the consolation prize, the winning prize was a thousand dollars cash, but yes, I felt like a real winner!

Man!!
That is way too cool for skool!! Seriously, that is a great story BD!
Who would have guessed that over time the consolation prize would become more valuable than the grand prize.

$1000.00 or Jimi LIVE?...
hmmm?? 1000 bucks?... OR... seeing Jimi live?
JIMI HENDRIX LIVE! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

It is hard to wrap my head around that story... that is wild!
And to do that as a 13 years old! Congrats BD!! You ARE da King! smileys with beer

The first concert I attended under my own steam was the Stones at Manchester Kings Hall in '73 .

Not a bad one to kick off with.

[When I've woken up I'll be able to figure out whether I was 13 or 14.]

Prior to that I'd tagged along with older friends to various concerts...Donovan being one such.

Saw the Who at Manchester in '74 but most of my concerts in the 70s were at Sheffield City Hall . Stand out memories include skynyrd & Rory.
Was there every other week for somebody or other.

By the time Knebworth came around in '76 I was a grizzled veteran !

...But for that "Longest Day" , I think you needed to be winking smiley

I saw Cliff Richard and The Shadows in 1966 at age 9. It was a Christmas pantomime at London Palladium.

First real rock gig was The Beach Boys at Royal Festival Hall on the Holland tour in 72. Saw the Stones in 73 at Wembley which is the gig I'm most proud of attending.

Bowie in June of 72 is impressive indeed--that's a pretty early Ziggy show. I didn't see him till 4 months later at the Santa Monica Civic. You musta been one hip-ass 13-year-old!

13 years old (seems to be about the average "first-concert"-age), 14 on Fire Zurich. I envy many of you who saw the likes of the Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Creme, Bowie etc. in the 60s and 70s!

We took our daughter to see the Stones when she was 5, Voodoo Lounge, Meadowlands.

My first Stones show was at 17, Buffalo 1981.

My first concert was Johnny Cash when I was 7.

Bring the 10 year old, you never know when he will have another opportunity!

15- Van Halen 1981 in Vancouver. Great show, if you go on Youtube and watch the Unchained video, that was filmed at the Oakland Coliseum just days after the Vancouver show. First Stones shows were 89 at both Vancouver shows.

16 years old. The Who, Dec. 8th, 1979, Chicago International Amphitheatre. Demand for tickets was so great & they could not add another show so they set up closed circuit viewing at area movie theaters. Was so loud I couldn't hear properly for 2 days.

There's several other videos of this show on youtube! thumbs up

The Who at the International Amphitheater in Chicago, IL on 08 December 1979

I saw them not long after that in June, 1980 at the L.A. Sports Arena. They played five dates there between the 23rd and 28th (don't remember which one I was at), as well as two night at the L.A Forum just prior to that.
I do remember it was the end of the school year, and as a 16 year old 11th grader some friends and I had bragging rights that we were going to see The Who, and it was LOUD indeed!

Did you keep the stubs?

I kept my concert stub collection until about 2000 when my scrapbook got damaged in a flood (damn water heater). The Hendrix stub only had the date, venue and seat location. The Cream stub was more impressive as it had a picture of the band on it. After the flood I decided I wouldn't collect anything anymore....except for musical instruments. Somewhere in one of my boxes of photos, I probably have some pictures I took of Cream but because of the distance and the lousy quality of the camera, you could barely see anything. I have posted here, and on my facebook page, a picture I took of Clapton, right in front of his face at a Derek & the Dominos show in 1970

Great first show!

No matter what they say... or even I say... about VH these days, back then they were a top notch hellafun band to see live in concert. Back before all the break up crap and BS they were a seriously fun band to see live... as close to an actual party with 15,000-20,000 people as one could have.

Van Halen - Unchained - 6/12/1981 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official)

It is funny cool, I never watched that video before...
cuz it is kind of depressing to me how bad Dave actually
sang/talked all of the songs so I avoid watching...
BUT @1:54 I have took that exact picture when they came to my town...
I have that exact same shot... same clothes... same angle... same stage pose.
It is my famous VH shot at @1:55 [youtu.be]

I saw Van Halen when nobody knew who they were. I was at this converted warehouse somewhere in the San Gabriel Valley. They were the opening act for this band called Venus & the Razor-blades. It was a few months later that they became a regular act at Gazzaries on the Sunset Strip.

Wow, I sure miss those daysdrinking smiley
