All things must pass. Used to love watching the Japanese monster movies. Now, hmm? I remember the one I first saw was the one they butchered and inserted scenes with Raymond Burr as a reporter. Much later I saw the original. What a difference in intent and story.

"Big in Japan" is a great song.

Godzilla is alive and well. The oddly-titled (unless you speak Japanese) SHIN GODZILLA (2016) was released on DVD last week. The follow-up to the Warner Bros. 2015 American film, GODZILLA is due in 2019 with a rematch with King Kong planned for 2020 (a follow-up to this year's KONG: SKULL ISLAND). Toho expects to have a sequel to their SHIN GODZILLA in 2021. In the interim, they're releasing the first animated feature film later this year (direct to Netflix in the States).

Even our own Rockman referenced King Ghidorah the other week in a post.

And finally, Raymond Burr was added to two films when they crossed the Pacific. 1954's GOJIRA became 1956's GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS with Burr playing a very serious journalist named Steve Martin. Three decades later he was trotted out (well rolled out is more appropriate) to reprise the role when 1984's GOJIRA (not a remake, strictly speaking) became GODZILLA 1985 with the addition of Burr and a bunch of product placement scenes for Dr. Pepper.

Reports of the Big Guy's death have been greatly exaggerated. Mr. Burr, another Big Guy, is dead, though.

Have you seen it? It is the most bizarre Godzilla movie ever.

I just watched it with my kids a couple weeks ago. It is strange. I don't know what's the oddest part. The Japanese parade dragon that's supposed to evolve into Godzilla? The endless C-Span footage that looks like it was found footage at times and directed by a deranged Hitchcock student at other times? The ending when primordial humans are evolving off Godzilla's carcass? Yet, the title means "Real" Godzilla as a slam against the Hollywood versions. What was nostalgic fun as a kid seems more and more like something that just doesn't translate well.
