OT: Neil Young to finally release Hitchhiker album from 1976
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: August 4, 2017 12:34

The album was the forerunner to Comes A Time and Rust Never Sleep, which both used songs destined for Hitchhike.

Now I'm hoping he'll see fit to release Homegrown, the album that would have come out after On The Beach.

Here's some information about it. The story includes a link to the song Hitchhiker.

Neil Young Releasing Lost 1976 Album Hitchhiker, Shares Title Track: Listen

Neil Young has announced the release of Hitchhiker, an album recorded in 1976.

It’s due out September 8 via Reprise. Listen to the title track below.

Hitchhiker comprises solo acoustic songs that Young recorded live over the course of one day in Malibu, several of which later appeared on albums like Comes a Time and Rust Never Sleeps. “Hitchhiker” was eventually rerecorded for Young’s 2010 album Le Noise.

The original recordings were produced by Young’s long-time collaborator David Briggs, and the new release features post-production from John Hanlon.

Hitchhiker includes early renditions of songs like “Pocahontas,” “Powderfinger,” and “Human Highway,” as well as the previously unreleased tracks “Hawaii” and “Give Me Strength.” Check out the full tracklist below.

Hitchhiker:
01 Pocahontas
02 Powderfinger
03 Captain Kennedy
04 Hawaii
05 Give Me Strength
06 Ride My Llama
07 Hitchhiker
08 Campaigner
09 Human Highway
10 The Old Country Waltz

Most definitely. Underrated too. I don't think he has played too much or anything off it.

Most of his albums, since then, have been awful, but at least Neil hasn't lapsed into songbook covers.

I said as much a few months ago. Great incredible @#$%& album. He did play a lot off of it, albeit just on the tour that supported the record. Not much since which is sad but unsurprising.

I agree most albums since haven't been great although Psychedelic Pill, all the songs that weren't 40 minutes long, were great. There's a great EP of material in there, and probably more good stuff if he tried instead of just being self indulgent. But that's Neil for ya.

I really liked Psychedelic Pill but you need to be in the mood to endure up to 30 minute wig outs.

And yes, he can go long periods releasing very average albums and then have a burst of great creativity. I'm thinking back in particular to the late 80s early 90s when he released Freedom, Ragged Glory, Harvest Moon and one of his greatest albums, Sleeps With Angels.

After that it was a long time until he brought out anything as consistently engaging.

Yeah that was pretty much his only creative "burst" and great run of records after the 70s. Since then its only been sporadic good albums, which I'm fine with since the good ones are really great and even if he never made a good album again his run in the 70s plus that rebirth in the 80s is more than most artists can sustain.

Ragged Glory is great. I also really like the song Cocaine Eyes from a few years before.

Driftin' Back from Psychedelic Pill is quintessential Neil/Crazy Horse imo, and while clocking in at a lengthy 27:50, I wouldn't have minded if it had been even longer.

Maybe in my haste to approve order delay, I mistook the 8th for the 3rd.
Listening right now...sweet. thumbs up

Yep, September 8 is the release date mentioned on Amazon USA, Amazon UK and on Neil's website.

That Hitchhiker song is pretty awful imho. Mebbe this is worth getting just for the protean versions of great songs that appeared on subsequent records?

Just listened to it via Amazon Prime last month. I thought it was fantastic...the rumbling distortion on his electric guitar is truly a thing of beauty.

Thank you for posting this heads up thumbs up

Also Thanks to CR for posting the Youtube song... it sounds awesome!

I closed my eyes and imagined sitting in the Dume Room and Neil was over
over in the corner, just him, his guitar and his harp... playing amazing
music that sounds like... the kind only Neil Young sounds like.

I agree with eddie... dang Neil... making me give him more money... I cant wait

Dare I say, that is a better track record than the Stones who have released one average album of blues covers, which some say was the best album they've released in 30+ years!
While not all of Neils output is always great, at least he hasn't given up on his creativity. Hope he continues to release new albums as well as older stuff from the archives.

I always thought Rust Never Sleeps was a remarkably good album for someone who was 33 years old at the time of its release. Not surprising that some of its best songs were written years earlier.

I heard a few of the albums in the remastered box sets of his mid-70s album yesterday - Zuma, Tonight's The Night and Time Fades Away - and they sounded great. Far cleaner sound with all the instruments ringing out crystal clear.
